The Empire of Piemonte-Sardegna arose out of the ruins of the Italian Empire of Italia 1. Italia 1 was a peaceful and prosperous kingdom in southern Europe. Her excellent ports allowed her to become a great seafaring nation, and as a result, a hub for international trade. However, unbenknowst to the unsuspecting population of the country, the nation's fortunes were to change radically. On October 25th, 2002, an earthquake struck the beautiful capital of Torino. With a magnitude of 8.2, most of the city did not escape. Although lasting less than three minutes, the earthquake had sure taken its toll ont he city. Once boasting a population of some 10 million people, at least three million were declared dead once the rubble of the city was cleared. Another four million fled to the other Italia 1 cities, which struggled under the strain of accepting so many refugees. Adding to the nation's woes of losing the beloved capital city, Italia 1 lost a massive source of revenue. Torino was the country's major port city, so as the city fell, so did the economy.

Stocks collapsed, forcing the closure of the markets. The once sound economy had crumbled virtually overnight. Immediately, the Italian 1 Parliament convened in order to affront the nation's crises. However, unable to face this, mass resignations followed, despite a plea from the prime minister.
