Overview

The Free Land of Quadaloompa is a democratic state located on a small island off the northern coast of Europe. The nation is thoroughly liberal, and is beginning a transition to polyocracy (see below for details). Defence spending is currently zero, and the nation abstains from both the UN and other alliances. The unusual motto is a remnant of Quadaloompa's early history as a pioneer of recreational drugs.

Polyocracy

A polyocracy is similar to a democracy, but holds referendums on most policies ('polyocracy' literally meaning 'rule by many'). For certain, complicated issues, such as economic policies, require proof of expertise before one can vote on them (e.g. an economics degree). This is allowed through use of the Internet, allowing voters to vote from home and removing excess buerocracy. This is slowly being phased into the country.

(Quadaloompa has been officially atheist since 1572, when the motion was debated in Parliament. This was in response to the spread of the Quadaloompan philosopher Cagh Doan's work ' Debates Of Religion And Science '. Organised religion, while not banned, lacks government support and is viewed by the majority of the populace as primitive superstition.)

History

Early History (400 B.C. - 1400 A.D.)

Quadaloompa's early history is vague. What few records survive of the time up to the time of the Enlightenment deal mainly with myths and legends involving supernatural forces.

It is believed that the island was first settled around 400 B.C., with tribal wars eventually creating one ruling dynasty by the birth of Christ.

What can be discerned is that Quadaloompa spent this time in relative isolation, developing a culture similar to that of Europe, but more lax and tolerant. There is no evidence of prolonged contact with any other cultures. The one surviving governmental text from these times is the origin of the national motto. This is also the first recorded evidence of the Quadaloompan wit - based on subtle hints and innuendo in the build-up to a straight statement.

Quadaloompan science and culture progessed at a high rate, with such innovations as the printing press allowing the fast spread of ideas, and a line of benevolent rulers who instituted a network of schools for the wealthy by the early 1300's. These two factors contributed to the rise of Quadaloompan civilisation beyond the 15th century.

Medieval History (1400 - 1700 A.D.)

As the Renaissance swept Europe, Quadaloompa remained aloof from European affairs. In 1491, the royal family was swept from power and a democracy was set up in it's place; the country was ruled for the rest of this period by the aristocracy.

Although Quadaloompa succumbed early to missionaries from both Catholicism and Protestantism, most of these converts left the country in outrage after the failure of an attempted coup, triggered by the Atheism Act of 1572.

Around this time, Quadaloompa began trading with other nations and establishing diplomatic contacts.
