Rathanan is a roleplaying nation that was just recently started and it slowly making its way in the NS world.

Government

The Government of Rathanan is very powerful and controling dictatorship. Rathanan does not, however, have the problem that other totalitarian nations face with incredibly bad or insane rulers. The reason for this is that all Holy Emperors, while easily dynastic in nature, are analyzed and anointed by the Church of Rathanan. While Rathanan is by no means DIRECTLY controled by the church, it has enough power as to be a counter ballance to the Holy Emperor.

History

The landmass that would become the Holy Empire of Rathanan began as part of the Holy Roman Empire. Rathanan itself was a very important part to the Holy Roman Empire and was even called at times "a miniature Rome." The problems between Rathanan and the Holy Roman Empire began with the beginning of the selling of indulgences and other forms of corruption in the church. While the people of Rathanan grew weary of this, they remained quiet as they feared retribution from Rome. However, when Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation in 1517, the people became more vocal. The bishiop in charge of Rathanan, Alexander Dennali, who growing weary of Rome's corruption as well, turned the growing anti Roman sentiment into full scale revolution. After a bloody 7 year revolution, the people of Rathanan finally drove the Holy Roman Empire out of their nation and declared their independance. The people were quick to make Alexander Dennali their leader. Dennali quickly did away with the Roman Catholic Church and quickly established the Church of Rathanan, which is known to be very similar to the Lutheran Church, with minor revisions. Dennali also set a standard for how the Holy Emperor of Rathanan would be appointed (see government). Despite all the good things going for the newly founded nation, Dennali and the people of Rathanan still faced one major threat - invasion. Holy Emperor Alexander Dennali quickly put in place a compulsory military service mandate for all males ages 14-25 (this would be edited often as time when on). With as a growing military power, Holy Emperor Dennali wished to expand his now very small nation by attacking the neighboring territories controled by other nations. The Holy Imperial Army (as it came to be called) was brutally efficiant and took many territories with ease. Dennali had many other plans for his newly errected nation, but before he could implement them, he died at the age of 60. The people of Rathanan named their capitol city after him and the church gave him the title of "saint". St. Alexander Dennali was burried right outside the Capitol of Rathanan where his corpse still remains to this day.

After the death of St. Alexander Dennali, the founder of the Holy Empire of Rathanan, the church of Rathanan anointed his cousin, Androphine Dennali. While Holy Emperor Androphine is no where near as credited as his cousin, he did make important strides in expanding the Rathani economy, erecting the Holy Imperial Navy and the Inquisition (the Rathani secret police and spy network),and constructing cities in their newly taken land. Holy Emperor Androphine Dennali had a peaceful and stable 30 year rule over his nation before he died of a heart attack at the age of 73. Due to his powerful and effective leadership, the church of Rathanan named him a saint as well as a new city erected by the beautiful Lake Christum was named after him.

After the death of St. Androphine, a series of short lived Holy Emperors ruled the nation, making few signifigant changes and dealing in very few wars. It wasn't until roughly 1890 that a new very noteable Emperor rose to power. Holy Emperor Cypher Benidict succeeded his father, Flavius Benidict (who was responsible for the biggest economic depression in the nation's history), as Holy Emperor. Holy Emperor Cypher was responsible for increasing the size of the Empire by at least 60 miles on each side, giving it the boarders it has now. Cypher also cleaned up some of the economic mess his father made, but the solutions he offered were very temporary. Cypher is also well known for starting the Holy Imperial Airforce in 1915 and the Paladins (special forces) in 1920. Holy Emperor Cypher is also known for keeping the Holy Empire of Rathanan out of World War 1. Holy Emperor Cypher later died of typhus in 1922. Since he was the most signifigant Holy Emperor that Rathanan had in a long time, the church gave him the title of "saint" and a new, huge port city was named in his honor.

After St. Cypher's death, the church was having trouble finding an heir as Cypher had no children of his own. They found their heir in Cypher's nephew, Marcus Calidan. After a very lengthy questioning period of the young man (age 20) the church finally agreed to anoint him, thus beginning the Calidan bloodline. Marcus had an easy time at the beginning of his rule, however, when the depression hit Rathanan his regime began to have its fair share of troubles. When the depression hit, the temporary repairs that St. Cypher had made to the economy crumbled and the economy was obliterated. In a vain attempt to counter this, Marcus ordered that more money be printed, which, in turn, began to inflate the Rathani currency. With pressure from Rathani economists, Marcus stopped the order soon after it was implemented and began to pull ideas from the American president, Frankin Delano Roosevelt, and his approach to the Great Depression. This meagarly helped. To make matters worse for the Rathani economy, World War 2 had just broken out and it wasn't strategically sound for the Empire to join either side, thus forcing them to remain neutral. Rathanan remained in economic despair for decades, even through Marcus' son and successor, Flavius Calidan. Flavius succeeded his father in 1967 and could do little to solve the economic problems of the nation. His approach was much the same as his father's, which was a dismal failure. Despite his economic failures, Flavius is well known for signing on with the Empire of Baron which has been (on the grand skeem of things) good for Rathanan. Flavius eventually started to help the economy with his policies until his death in 2002. Eyes were immediately falling upon his only son, Lucius Calidan.

The church was very hesitant to anoint another Calidan due to the failings of the last two. Not to mention, Lucius stood in line to be the youngest Emperor since Holy Emperor Constantine Derivius, who was only six years old when he was anointed in 1798. However, Lucius took the church by suprise with his vast knowledge and shrewed personality. Through a very large ordeal, Lucius Calidan was anointed Holy Emperor in 2003. However, at his coronation ceremony, there was an attempt on his life. During the last two Calidans' leaderships, there was a Communist revolutionary group growing. Though the attempt failed, it began a full scale civil war within the Holy Empire. After roughly a year of civil war, the Imperial forces defeated the communist rebels. Some were executed and others were sent to the Inquisition controled Island of Judas the Betrayer where they were worked, starved, and tortured to death. Now with the civil war out of his way, Lucius sought to rebuild two things..... His nation and his nation's economy. Lucius saved the Rathani economy by embracing capitalism almost in its entirity (with few exceptions). When he had the economy squared away, he used that to reconstruct his nation. Recently, Lucius imported nuclear arms from The Most Serene United Kingdom of Bodoria, which in turn, started the second Baron war..
