Overview
Rheinlandistan is an island country located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. The island of Rheinlandistan is mainly forest, with climate similar to that of Central Europe. It's largest population group are descendants of Germanic colonists who arrived to the island in 1600's. They were mostly from German Rheinland area, hence the name "Rheinlandistan". There are also many Scandinavians who descend from Vikings who arrived to the island in 900's living in the island and compose 15% of the population. Other ethnic groups are Inuit-related natives, who were mostly hunted down and killed by the Germanic colonists and comprise 2% of Rheinlandistani population and descendants of slaves who escaped from captivity who comprise 5% of population. Howewer, there are also several various-sized communities of various ethnic groups, such as Finns, Italians, French etc.
Politics and Government
Rheinlandistan is a constitutional monarchy with a constitution that carefully regulates the division of power between the king, parliament and judicial system. Current king is Wilhelm IV von Wittelsbach, who descends directly from the first king of independent Rheinlandistan. Even though the king used to have absolute power in Rheinlandistan, the power of the king has gradually been reduced after The Great War of Succession and today the power mostly rests in the hands of the chancellor and the parliament and the king's post is mostly ceremonial. Howewer, king still has some powers:He can dissolve the parliament if the parliament requests it by 2/3 majority, he commands the Köningliche Streitkräfte, or Royal Defence Forces and he also approves the legistlation. The title of king is inherited by the oldest son of the king, altough allowing females to inherit is a subject of constant debate.
The bicameral parliament, named Reichstag is elected every six years. The lower chamber, named National Council or Nationalrat is composed of 500 members who are elected via direct democratic election, while the upper chamber, Council of Nobles or Adligerrat is composed of representatives of all noble families in Rheinlandistan. The National Council does all the legistlation and appoints the chancellor or Reichskanzler, who is the leader of the government, and even though the Council of Nobles must approve all legistlation, it can only decline a law two times before it goes to the king, who can also decline it only one time. Current Reichskanzler is Kurt-Johann Niemann (NDP).
Political Parties:
Nationale Demokratische Partei Nationale Demokratische Partei, or National Democrat Party is the largest political party in Rheinlandistan, and also the main government party, is a nationalistic conservative right-wing party. It is headed by Kurt-Johann Niemann and has 36% of Reichstag seats.
Vereinigte Zentrumspartei Vereinigte Zentrumspartei or United Centrist Party was created in 1975 when the Centrist Party and the liberal wing of the Monarchist Party merged and formed United Centrist Party. It is a liberal right-wing party and also in government with NDP. It's chairman is Jürgen Kaufman and it controls 28% of Reichstag seats.
Sozialdemocratische Partei SDP of Social Democrat Party is the largest opposition party in Rheinlandistan. It is a moderate leftist party led by former trade union leader named Gerhard Röder. It holds 25% of Reichstag seats.
Green Party Green Party is a liberal party that supports enviromentalist and liberal policies. It holds 5% of Reichstag seats.
Monarchist Party Monarchist Party supports retainment of monarchy and also increasement of king's powers. As NDP and VZP also support monarchy, but not to such extent as Monarchist Party, most of MP's moderate supporers have been drawn to NDP and VZP. Chairman of Monarchist Party is count Heinz von Hannover, and MP holds 4% of Reichstag seats.
Germanic Fascist Party Germanic Fascist Party is a fascist party that supports racistic pro-germanic politics and fascist politics. Like CWP, it has also been banned several times, but currently it is legal. It's chairman is known anti-immigration activist Tim Sonner and it holds 1% of Reichstag seats.
Communist Worker's Party Communist Worker's Party is a Marxist-Leninist party that supports communist economical and society politics. Like GFP, it has been banned several times, and only recently was legalized. It holds 1% of Reichstag seats.
