In Brief

Saint-Newly is a former French colony on a large island in the North Atlantic. Following a brief civil war and subsequent Socialist government, it has effectively become an autonomous anarchy.

Saint-Newly, pre-colonisation

Until recently, the widely-held opinion was that there was no human population on Saint-Newly pre-1681, but this has been contested in recent years owing to the discovery of several artifacts believed to be stone-age hunting axes. However, it should be noted that aside from the axes, the origins of which are by no means clear, there is no evidence of human settlement on the island prior to the French colonisation.

Saint-Newly, 1674-1820

In 1674, a heavily-forested island was sighted by Portuguese merchants who drifted off-course. Although the sailors reported their discovery, it was met with general disinterest. It was believed at the time that the island was much smaller than reported by the sailors. As the Franco-Dutch war drew to a close, however, Louis XIV had realised that without a presence in the Atlantic, he would find it harder to put pressure on the prosperous Spanish and Portuguese trading routes. Choosing to believe the Portuguese sailors' reports of the large, wooded island, in 1681 he sent a small fleet led by Pierre Depardieu to the island.
