The Borderlands of Sanity and Reason is a very large, devout nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 50 million love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked morass -- juggles the competing demands of Religion & Spirituality, Education, and Social Welfare. The average income tax rate is 46%, but much higher for the wealthy.

History

The Borderlands of Sanity and Reason was the brainchild of an intellectual named Josiah Frederick Beurrel. Beurrel was born in a small, opressive nation and worked at a local college, teaching primarily political science and critical thinking, and was also a founder of an intellectual group, which was forced to meet in secret. Eventually, the government began to weed out those whose views did not line up with the state. Beurrel was one of those who was targeted and was found guilty of spreading "dangerous ideologies." Beurrel went into hiding, eventually fleeing the country, along with a sizable group. The refugees sailed southeast, where they happened to come between a nation at civil war. Beurrel's group fought their way through and eventually reached a region called A New Beginning. They settled in a land which was abandoned by a former occupant. The people called their new nation the Borderlands of Sanity and Reason, and made Josiah Beurrel the first president.
