Introduction

The United States of Secularis is a young and powerful nation, capable of influencing the surrounding region with it's immense Economic power. Both a strongly democratic, and capitalist nation, Secularis is a strong ally for Democracies, and a strong foe for Communists.

History

The History of Secularis is one of oppression and control that, until recently, was perpetrated by a massive empire.

Early History

From the Years 1690-1924 the Empire of Kanzity was a world wide superpower. It's territories stretched from the Ridge Mountains in the west to the Gany Penninsula in the east. From the Raltan River in the north, to the Medion Sea in the south. It was a massive empire, built through violence and war. The first white Kanzity speaking settlers first began settling in what would become known as the Gany Penninsula (after Alfred Gany) around 1780. These settlers would one day become the future citizens of Secularis, but for now they were still subject to the Imperial throne. They were primarily used as a economic trading post and naval dockyard to control the surrounding region. They were treated the same as any other subjects under Imperial law, without any rights, but rather left unmolested.

Communism

As the 19th century drew to a close the Kanzity Empire was plagued with corruption and instability. Through a series of wars spanning from 1870-1924 large expanses of territory were lost to rivals and revolts, including the Gany Penninsula. There was a short period of self-rule under various confederate governments from 1905-1935. In that period of time the Imperial family was overthrown by a communist revolution that swept the country by storm. It would know be known as The Democratic People's Marxist Republic of Kanzity. At first the government prospered under boosted morale and improving conditions for the working man. In a series of bloody wars Kanzity steam rolled over it's surrounding neighbors, resulting in a significant reclaming of it's former territory, including the Gany Penninsula. However, toward the early 1950's, the government began to floudner under more corruption and civil dissatisfaction with the communist party. Revolts followed strikes, and revolts in turn where followed by assasinations until an all out civil war broke out, shattering the entire country to many factions. Some areas were either reconquered by neighbors, or became independent, such as Sepish. Secularis gained it's independency through a short war lead by Guerilla freedom fighters, Such as Bryant Eniap and his National Independence Captialist Party or the N.I.C.P. They were based out of the largest city on the Penninsula, then known as New Kanzity (now the capital city of Novus). After a long period of secret resistance, they began launching emboldened strikes with a coalition of other cities and organization against the troops stationed there. After UN peacekeeping troops were deployed, Kanzity's various Warlords couldn't be bothered with overseas territories.

Early Independence

From 1960-1980 The Ganian people were busy trying to protect themselves in case the then potential threat of a reunified Kanzity came after them. They started out as a confederacy of different states based around cities and counties. Realizing the frailty of this form of government, they soon began writing up a constitution to outline their form of central government, and it's role with the states. This work was spear-headed by Bryant Eniap and the N.I.C.P. They based much of their work upon the writings of the European enlightenment, and as a result came to closely resemble the American constitution, which shared a common ideological basis. The country became a federal system dividing it's different factions into states. However due to the sheer numbers of states, a great convention known as "The New Ganian Federalist Convention" was called to discussing combining the then plethora of small states into much larger states, to streamline the politics of the country. Now with the more managable number of 20 (as oppose to the previous 185) the congress could be more effectively ran.

The Phoenix Rises:1980-2000

During the late 1970's many Ganian's who where ethnically different than the Kanzity majority began to object to the de facto national language of Kanzity. This, mixed with the ongoing civil war in Kanzity, and it's following association with barbarity and imperialisim, pushed a new movement to change the cultural landscape of the nation. In 1978, Bryant Eniap and the N.I.C.P. brought forward a series of legislature refered to collectivly as the "New Order." This was led to a change in name, from the Confederate States of Kanzitian Gania to The United States of Secularis, based of off the latin word Seclorum, meaning "enlightened era". All people would now be referred to as Seculorians, a new flag was commisoned, and the official language became English, chosen primarily for it's usefullness in world trade, and resulting in it's adoption in all schools, resulting in a commmon language for all the people. The Currency became the Daler, which replaced the old Kanzitian writ, and the national anthem became "Amazing Grace", symbolising both the new nations revival from 180 years of Imperial rule and communisim, and it's religious enlightenment following the downfall of state imposed atheisim.

The nation embraced both civil liberties and an almost laissez-faire system of economics. However political freedoms were rather restricted in order to ensure stability, as the right to strike had been severly restricted in order to persuade foreign investment. By 1980 the new nation joined the UN, just as UN support was leaving. The new nation began building up it's own domestic companies and was soon an economic powerhouse in the region. After an amazing 30 years as President, Bryant Eniap stepped down in favor of George Mada, another N.I.C.P. canidate. Still afraid of a possible Kanzity invasion, Secularis bought foreign weapons and training, equipping it's military with both left over soviet style arsenals and new western doctrines and techniques. In order to sufficently prepare for such a scenario, the country imposed a mandatory draft of all citizens at the age of 18 for 4 years, and increased defense spending. In the late 90's political freedoms where increased, and the economy suffered a slight economic hiccup due to companies having to reconfigure practices to conform with new unions now in place throughout the country.

Expansion: 2000-2020 (present day)

The economic down turn was blamed on George Mada. Though many would argue that it was a necessary recession in order to increase political rights, and that the ground work for it was laid out during the end of Eniaps Presidency, Mada took the blame. As a result the nation imposed a limit upon The presidency, limiting the president to a maximum of two five-year terms. After Mada left office the N.I.C.P fell from power. After a complete domination of Seclorian politics for 40 years, the N.I.C.P. lost power to the new Corporate Conservative Party. They continued attempting to increase both economic and political freedom. However they also continued to increase military spending. With the creation of the Seclorian Defense Corporation, the Pyramid Arms Company, the Lockworks Aeronautical Defense Inc., the Republican Technologies and Defence Company, and many others, Secularis was experienceing a pandora'a box of military advancements.

With a skilled an motivated professional armed forces, Secularis began to show the world it's new found military prowess. In two rapid and effective military engagements Secularis defeated both an oversea communist dictatorship in the Islands of Coceptus, and the Island of Graida. After policing the Islands for seveal years they later annexed them. Now with 22 states and a few extra islands added as territories coupled with their military premenince, Secularis was a massive regional power, capable of both hard and soft power projection through their one-two punch of Economic force coupled with a small but crack military.

Geography

Secularis is based on the former Gany Penninsula, now renamed the Seclorian Penninsula. It is therefore primarily surrounded by water, and with know rivals or countries of similar power near it, they view their naval and merchant fleets as paramount. The point where Secularis ends, and her neighbors begin has been traditionally marked by the Ganian Mountain Range. Two states are islands. One, Graida, is only 60 miles north of the penninsula. The other, Coceptus, is quite farther around 1,500 miles east of the penninsula.

Economy

The Seclorian economy is extermly strong. It's biggest industries are beef-based industries, telecommunications, and the most extensive, efficient, and most modern pizza delivery industries. However, due to it's economic preminence it has many strong industries. As a nation with no welfare, Secularis has developed an extensive private sector. Privatization is the first reaction the people have to any problem.

Politics

Secularis is a federalist indirect democracy. It has an extensive constitution and bill of rights which are stringently enforced. It has taken time for the political system to become truly represenative due to the instability of it's early years, however, Seclorian democracy is now firmly entriched within the nation. Their early years was completely dominated by the N.I.C.P. However after 2000 the Corporate Conservatives took power. The Conservatives were actually little different than the N.I.C.P. as the parties are based more around winning than issue based. Since that time it has been a two party system, split between the Conservative, and N.I.C.P. now simply referred to as the Nationalist party. The difference between these two parties (which is slight) is that where the Corporate Conservatives are primarily interested in the economy, embrace a more laissez-faire economic system, and privatize everything, Nationalists are primarily interested in increasing political freedoms and a more direct form of democracy. However both are strongly capitalist and democratic, the difference is primarily centered around their priorities, where the economy comes first for the Conservatives, the democratic method is the primary concern for the Nationalists. Therefore the difference between these two parties is more like the difference between day and morning than day and night.

The Nationalist party has recently regained political dominance. Adam Scott is now the President and Commander-in-Chief. His platform is that Secularis must increase both it's economic and military prowess if it is to ward of the growing shadow of Sepish from across the ocean. As such, a massive naval base has been built up on Conceptus to protect against any Sepishian aggression. Scott is a very popular president who was asked by the both parties to run as their candidate. A war hero and economics major, Scott is almost the perfect Seclorian President.

The Congress is currently divided primarily between the Nationalists and Conservatives, with the Senate set up as follows: 23 Nationalists, 19 Conservatives, 2 Confederates (people who are pushing for even more state power, a minority party). The National Assembly is divided as follows: 101 Nationalists, 90 Conservatives, 6 Confederates, 1 Anarchist, 2 independents.

The Grand Jury is the Judicial branch, with 13 members who can be appointed by either the President, then ratified by congress. Or through the people's state legislatures, in which case a 2/3rd of the voters have to agree on a Grand Jury member to bring them in. It is currently divided as follows: 5 Nationalists, and 8 Conservatives.

People

Secularis has a little over 50 million people. Seclorians are famed for being self-sufficient, hard-working, independent, hard-working, and fiercly patriotic. There is a stereotype that Seclorians are overbearing or even militant. These stem in part from the fact that the Presidents full title is President and Commander-in-Chief, and part from their large military budget and compulsory service. These stem from there past oppresion and domination by cruel governments, and so has led to a fierce sense of both freedom and the necessity of protecting that freedom.

Military

The Seclorian Military is an extremely modern and effiecent one. The nation has compulsary conscription of all healty citizens at the age of 18 for a term of 4 years. The conscription is not only for the military as their are multiple communicty service choices available, of which, the military is just one of them. The military is highly trained and highly motivated, as well as well-funded.

It is divided into 3 Branches, the Army, the Navy, the Aeronuclear Branch (similar to air force and NORAD rolled into one).

Army

The Army is divided between the infantry (including mechanized, light, and airborn), the artillery, the armor, the Foresters (similar to army rangers), and the army special forces unit, the Penetrators. Also, helicopters are assigned to the army, as opposed to airforce as would be assumed.

Navy

The Naval power is based strongly upon the Aircraft carrier, using Cruisers as anti-aircraft ships primarily. The destroyer is the work horse, and the frigate is a cheaper form of work horse. It also has a wide array of special forces craft and submarines for both use as nuclear deterents and hunter/SpecOps roles. They have a marine corp, simply known as the Seclorian Marines, and a special forces unit, the Commandos.

Aeronuclear

The Aeronuclear branch works very similar to the current American airforce. The also bear responsibilitiy for the nuclear capabilities and air defense.

Intelligence Agencies

Though not technically the military, the intelligence agencies play an important part. The Domestic Police Bureau or DPB is more of a federal police force. The Intelligence and Espionage Agency or IEA is used similarly in the role of the CIA.
