The Holy Empire Of St Hilarion is a nation located in the Mediterranean of Earth SYAE (Sigh, Yet Another Earth). Its compassionate, cynical population of 165 million are ruled by an oppressive emperor, who does not care much for the individual citizen.
Geography
The Empire of Saint Hilarion consists of the territories of Italy, Greece, Cyprus, and Malta. All of the islands (Sicily, Crete, Gozo etc) are also possessions of the Empire. It has a total area of 442,872 km², and an estimated population of 70.4 million.
History
St Hilarion was formerly a part of the British Empire (This is recognized though St Hilarion’s status as a self-proclaimed empire). At the advent of its Independence in 1960, the Nation was split between the Greek minority and the Turkish majority. Tensions between the two came to a head in December 1963, when violence broke out in the capital of Nicosia. Despite the deployment of UN peacekeepers in 1964, frequent violence continued to force most Greek Cypriots into hiding throughout the nation. In 1974, a Turkish Government-sponsored attempt to seize control of Cyprus was met by a sudden and completely unexpected guerilla response from the Greeks. This soon escalated to a full blown war, and the Greeks soon controlled more than a third of the island, due to their superior tactics and knowledge of the terrain. The two sides remained at a deadlock for a further 11 years, until the Greeks gained a winning component; Artemis Hilarion. Only 21 at the time, he revolutionized the Greek way of fighting, and slowly advanced throughout the country, until in 1985, the Turks surrendered. Artemis declared himself emperor, and St. hilarion was born. He ruled through a dictatorship, and all his successors followed from this example.
