Current Overview
The Democratic Republic of Syayrien Union is a tiny, devout nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape & compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.
The large government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Religion & Spirituality, and Healthcare. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 22%. A large private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Door-to-door Insurance Sales and Gambling.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Syayrien Union's national animal is the Hound and its currency is the Shoe.
History
Pirates who were fleeing from the Romans founded the TAJ Imperium in the early 1st Century. After several years of pirate rule, the pursuing Romans arrived and conquered the local populace and then enslaved them. In AD47, the locals rebelled. The 3-month War ended in a Peace Treaty.
Their 1st attempts at Self-Rule were bold but they failed. After a few years they had succeeded at Self-Rule and by the 16th Century, had a mighty fleet and army as well as several new and bold policies. But they also brought a new enemy: Vampires. They came and killed the Countries Leaders and renamed the country, Vampire Land.
When France became a Republic, the Leaders of both countries became firm friends. They allied themselves with Napoleon Bonaparte when the Wars came and lost. After that, the people became angry and soon talk of rebellion spread. Then came the 1st World War, in which the Vampires tried and failed to help the Germans. By the time their troops came home in 1918, the rebellion broke out. From 1918 to 1930, the 2nd Civil War ravaged across the Country like the Black Plague.
In 1930, the last of the Vampires fled the country. Their 2nd attempt at Self-Rule began in earnest. By 1939, they had new policies and had rebuilt their army and fleet. They also had a new air force. Then the 2nd World War began. The TAJ Imperium, as they had renamed themselves, quickly allied with Britain and fought against Hitler and his evil hordes. After the War ended, they had proved themselves worthy of a place in the new UN.
During the Cold War, they helped the Americans spy on the Soviets who quickly became suspicious of The TAJ Imperium. In 1960, the Vampire Rat suddenly appeared. Initial analysis has yet to uncover their Origins. In late May of that year, their region with the help of The Mighty European Emperor of EuroFounder, created the region of Europe.
After the Cold War ended, Credit Chitz, which were originally gambling chips, suddenly became the main currency. In the year 2000, they declared themselves a Democratic Republic and had ordered Military Conscription due to a national plague a year before.
