General Overview

The Democratic Republic of Arsenea is a huge, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 501 million hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

The large, corrupt government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Education, and Commerce. The average income tax rate is 20%. A healthy private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.

Arsenea's national animal is the falcon, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the rei.

History

For many centuries, the ancient Arseneans (known then as the Tipharaneans, which roughly translates from Hebrew to mean brave ones. The ancient Arseneans were believed to be of Israeli descent, possibly descended from Abraham himself) lived in solitude, keeping to themselves. Arsenea has an icy, rocky mountain range surrounding it, defining its borders and keeping out foreign armies. Many times neighboring tribes tried to conquer Arsenea to no avail. The opposing army was so weakened by the journey over the mountains, that their force was to small and they couldn't fight effectively. But eventually Arsenea fell into civil war, as the lack of foreign trade led to a collapse of the infrastructure. As chaos took hold, a neighboring tribe saw the opportunity to conquer Arsenea, and invaded. What was left of the militia in Arsenea, previously an army that was a veteran at fighting in the mountains, mustered 300 men and marched to the North Mountains to try and stop the opposing force. The 300 Tipharaneans fought valiantly, but died after a month long war. The invading army took over Arsenea and burned it to the ground. A handful of Tipharaneans survived, and sustained the Arsenean culture. 75 years later, French settlers settled in the still recovering Arsenea and brought civilised culture with them. When they first appeared, the Arseneans fired arrows made of the finest oak, tipped with the strongest steel at the French settlers, before it was made clear that the settlers came in peace. The settlers therefore re-named the people Arseneans, which means arrow makers in French. Disease eventually caused the French settlers to leave, but the name Arsenea stuck. Since then, the Arseneans have prospered, being open to other nations and allowing the influx of trade, culture, and ideas to occur.
