The Kootenays are named after the Native Tribes of North America. They chose the western name to identify themselves because their native Tarutaru name is completely unpronouncable by foreign tongues or even modern Tarutaru. Due to their dislike of vast technology they live simple lifestyles with nature and smaller settlements. They have also rejected the use of gunpowder weaponry until recently and live well without the interference of much technology. Only recently have they started to utilize modern technology in their living but only to more practical uses.

Like the other six tribes, the Denne used the non-harmful form of technology. Instead of utilizing their traditional animal skinned mass tents and wooden longhouses they start using synthetic materials and steel reinforced pillars in the construction of them. The Kootnays are good at local brewing. Their skills in fermenting grains and such have lead to a semi-settled lifestyle. They are not nomadic unlike the other tribes and live farmlife and settled village life simple and in more distant regions of the empire. The Kootenays, like the other six tribes are expert trackers and hunters and live naturally well in the wilderness. They are by no means barbarians in any means due to the fact that their musical skills, along with the other six tribes cannot be rivaled. They are also formidable martial artists and throughout the Tarutaru Union's military forces they are used as bodyguards as well as instructors for basic and advanced self defense skills.

Like the other six tribes, the Kootenays have only recently involved themselves into foreign affairs. They are seatholders in the Tarutaru Union. They, like the Principalities, and Protectorates are given full membership with 3 seats per tribe. Their economics and domestic financial matters are often left in the hands of Xheng officials assigned to assist them.
