Overview

History

Before the Commonwealth

Approximately 1450 A.C. (Antequam Commonwealth), the area was bespotted with several small city-states that rivalled against each other, build coalitions, and broke them. It was an ever-changing morass of politics. In 1300 A.C., the city-state of Bellaron, under the leadership of Sovereign Igor Yentis, was able to unite the neighboring cities under its rule establishing the First Empire of Bellaron. This empire included the major city-states of Ninn, Thoy, Coretta, and Vanaret.

The Yentis Dynasty lasted only three generations before being deposed ushering in the Second Empire of Bellaron, in 1156 A.C., under Imperator Janus Malsant. Under the Malsant Dynasty the empire grew and prospered. It was during this time that the city of Coretta became the commercial center of the empire because of the imperial trade policy. It was during this dynasty that the traditional land owning aristocrats, who were mostly Thoyard and Bellaronian, began to give way to the economically powerful merchants and traders.

The Malsant Dynasty ended when Imperator Draconis Malsant did not have any male heirs. It was succeeded by the Xin Dynasty. The Tholio Xin, Draconis' successor, was not popular at all with the land owning aristocrats, who traditionally had to approve of an Imperator's successor. Tholio was born from Ninnian aristocrats, widely regarded as little better than barbarians, and only succeeded Draconis through marriage. The Xin Dynasty barely lasted one generation before the other aristocratic families assassinated Tholio and his family.

The aristocratic lines decided to do away with strict hereditary lines of rule and substituted it with a republic form of government forming the first Noble Republic of Bellaron in 413 A.C. The Republic was little more a consortium of aristocrats. It was not until the First Civil War, in 401 A.C., will the Republic include the 'common' people.

The original city-states were now major population centers in this new republic, but divisions along these lines ran deep. It was still not uncommon an entire ethnic population to leave the republic in protest over the laws being passed by the republic. For example, in 289 A.C., the city of Ninn succeded from the republic over what they deemed unfair laws regulating the pasturing of herd animals. These brief successions are marked by a brief military conflict and re-intergration into the republic.

The Second Civil War

It was one of these successions that brought about the formation of the Commonwealth.

In 4 A.C., the Grand Republic Senate, largely led by a coalition of Thoyards and Bellaronians and under the direction of Sovereign Killian Rourke, had passed several laws regulating business practices much to the dismay of many Corettan Senators. In the same year, the rotating office of President of the Grand Republic bypassed Coretta, when traditionally it was their turn. Because of this, the city of Coretta succeded from the Republic. The subsequent military conflict was far more costly for the Republic than expected and saw the city of Vanaret and other smaller cities join the Corettans in succession.

The Grand Republic had initial victories against the largely pacifist Corettans, capturing many smaller allied cities. But the tremendous manufacturing capability of Coretta produced a extremely armed and adept warmachine. The Corettans were able to convince other economically powerful cities to join them to form an alliance. The Grand Republic realized in the Battle of Nin Minor that Coretta and its allies could not be forced back into the Republic. The Peace Treaty of Absenia was signed January 9th, 1 AC.

Grand Restoration

For the next decade, the Grand Bellaronian Republic began to rebuild after the loss of the Second Civil War. Only three of the major cities remained in the Republic: Bellaron, Nin, and Thoy. Some of the minor cities saw this as an opportunity to fill in the void that Coretta and Vanaret left. Cethed and Absenia were accepted as major cities, notably with the support from Irilania Halthuri of Thoy, who succeeded Rourke as Sovereign shortly after the treaty signing.

Cethed and Thoy were the new centers of innovation and development. It was in a secret research facility in Thoy that Cethedian and Thoyard scientists first created Grand Republic neutron and hydrogen bombs. Absenians took the lead in military, at the dismay of Ninnian leaders.

Irilania Halthuri, in her fourth term as Sovereign, set about planning the invasion of the newly still infant Corettan Commonwealth, in 3 CY.
