The Democratic Free State of Tomathon was created by Laird Tom who famously won a small plot of land in a battle where he and his follows fought off the AK-47 wielding occupiers with plastic cutlery nicked from a local well-known fast food restaurant. Whether there is any truth in this legend is doubtful, but what can be ascertained is that Tomathon is constantly growing, with its loyal and patriotic citizens using rather more advanced weapons than those of their forefathers to expand the nation's terrority.

Opposition to UN

Laird Tom originally applied to join the UN, and this application was successful. Tomathon was a member of this organisation for a short time, and Laird Tom was often to be found voting on resolutions. However, the nation resigned its membership after a law which seriously infringed on the nation's independence was passed. Laird Tom announced that he was not prepared to have his country's policies dictated to him by "the type of crackpot upstarts who run the other UN nations." Since then the nation has not been a member of the UN, and has increasingly kept itself to itself. Laird Tom has often spoken to his populus about the failings of the UN.

National Flag

After originally hoisting the British flag, Laird Tom decided to commission a new flag especially for the fledgling nation. Every citizen was invited to submit a proposal, and the one which eventually won consisted on three vertical stripes; a yellow one on the left and right, and a white one in the centre. To reflect the alligence to the UK, the Union Flag was featured at the top left corner. The white stripe in the centre reflected peace running through the core of the nation, and the yellow stripes reflected the capitalism and wealth, the key to Tomathon's success and to it's ability to remain in peace.

Following a national petition run by the colourful Parliamentarian Kiljoy-Sulk, there was a referendum on whether the flag should be changed. Following a technical error, the wrong date was published, and only the organising committee of the referendum turned out. As the leader of the committee happened to have shares in a flag producing company, he persuaded the rest of the committee to vote in favour of the proposals.

The new national flag still consists of three vertical stripes, but the left one is now blue, which represents freedom, perseverance, justice, prosperity, peace, and patriotism. The right-hand stripe is a more goldy colour than the original, still representing wealth, but now also a shortage of yellow dye. The Union Flag remains in the top left hand corner, but the cross of St. David, added under the original flag, has been removed, as, in the words of Laird Tom, it looked "a bit naff." The crest of Laird Tom has also been added, to make the flag look a bit more interesting.
