Overview

The Viscount Bennett Imperialists are one of the strongest teams in the PopularFreedom Rugby League (PRL) throughout the last 20 years though have yet to win a championship. They play their games in the city of Viscount Bennett, PopularFreedom at Knights Field.

History

In 1983 the Viscount Bennett Imperialists rugby franchise was formed in conjunction with the other seven teams of the league.

After the Locke Harbour Dragons, the Viscount Bennett Imperialists are tied for 2nd in appearances in the PRL final, though in their 7 appearances have yet to win. Their most noteable achievements in the history of the franchise include:

  • In 1984 they took part in the first ever PRL final losing a close battle to the Locke Harbour Dragons 21-15 after the Dragons scored a last minute try to snatch victory away from the Imperialists.
  • In 1985 the Stanislav Lions were able to punish the Imperialists in the final 31-13.
  • In 1987 the Imperialists became the first team to make it to the PRL final 3 times. The Imperialists then went on to get annihilated 79-11 by the Locke Harbour Dragons in the worst mismatch in a PRL final until 1993.
  • In 1997 a revitalized Imperialist franchise made it back to the finals for the first time in 10 years only to lose once again this time 31-29 to the Locke Harbour Dragons in one of the most thrilling finals ever.
  • In 1998, after leading for most of the match, the Viscount Bennett Imperialists finally looked like they were going to defeat the Stanislav Lions and win a PRL championship, however 2 late converted tries sealed their fate as the Lions stole victory from the Imperialists 42-41 in a heartbreaking loss for the Imperialists.
  • In 2000, the league leading Viscount Bennett Imperialists again were superior throughout the season until they made it to the finals where this time, at home, they lost 17-5 to the Lenita Legions on a rain soaked, drenched field.
  • In 2002, the Imperialists again proved they could not win the big game as they lost 15-14 to the Workers Point Bobcats in a match closer on the scoreboard than it was on the field.
