The Woken Republic of Wakenfield (outdated)

Introduction

Since it’s independence from the USSR on September 24th 1945, Wakenfield has been growing in power. A island off the east coast of Siberia, this volcanic island is home to the Wakenfieldian Government and people. The local culture is reflected in the local geography, of the local 4 volcanoes, 3 of which are dormant, 1 of which is presumed extinct. A example of the local culture’s dependence on the volcanoes is the Volcano Pie, a mix of piping hot red Borsch (magma) and a volcano shaped pie crust. Also, the more experienced chefs use a local ‘Suck Fish’ to create a pressured pie, which when struck ‘Erupts’ the red Borsch.

Culture Overview

Wakenfield’s culture is heavily based on the 4 volcanoes on the main island and the fifth on the western island of Anlepebrond. The presence of the 5 volcanoes, and the other 3 that are claimed by the government, but technically owned by the USSR is so heavily embedded in Wakenfieldite culture that a religion has sprung from the belief that when the time has come a huge eruption will take place, causing the people of the island to evolve into dragon like beings and conquer the world, causing a Zionist movement to reclaim all three volcanoes. However, this religion is rarely practised in modern Wakenfield, the reason being that first the Dutch then the Russians persecuted the islanders beliefs. Due to these periods, the main religions practised in Wakenfield are Calvinism and Russian Orthodox, however the volcano worship, though without an official name nor any organisation, is still practised in small quantities, if in a less devote form than before. Some figures even suggest that the religion is growing in popularity. Although there aren’t any official places of worship for the volcano-worshipers, there have been calls for government funding for a temple.

Cooking also makes up a large proportion of the culture in Wakenfield, and as already mentioned, the national dish is the self-acclaimed ‘Volcano Pie’, with yet more references to the 8 volcanoes (it is even customary to have 8 pies at large feasts). Other dishes include: Bean soup, Cheese made from Rat’s milk, ‘Panpies’; two thin pancakes stuck together with a filling in the middle of the two pancakes, And anothers.

The people of Wakenfield speak Old English, quite how it got there nobody knows. Hypotheses include that Anglo Saxons lost themselves in the Atlantic Ocean and sailed into the Pacific, and ended up on the island. Another is that Vikings marooned revolting Anglo Saxon slaves on the island; this is the most supported Hypothesis. The modern people of Wakenfield have some of the whitest skin known to man, and an albino-like mutation has been blamed. However, local religion says that the people were once dragons, banished to the island and have the dragons inside them sucked out, taking away the dark skin. This belief isn’t too popular nowadays, due to the Dutch and Russian missionaries that came during the 16th and 17th centuries. The mood of the people is a nationalistic but not arrogant view of their country. However, Russians on the island do experience some Racism, but the Dutch are seen as a friendlier ruler. The rest of the world they have no opinion on, except from China and North Korea, and at a stretch North Vietnam, as these are allies of the Wakenfieldite government, and the people have friendly feeling over these people.

Tourism isn’t Wakenfield’s strong point; however steps have been taken to make it more profitable. The ‘Tourist’ line in Heahburg, though still under construction, is meant to lead to scenic and historical spots, such as the military bay view, the old fort and the revolution memorial. Other locations, which stations are to be declared open, include the future site of the National Museum, the historical sector, the Orthodox Cathedral and the business island. The business island line temporarily goes underground, due to the river Missprecann, and due to the safety-costs of building a highly charged tram line across a body of water.

The Countryside

The landscape has been heavily influenced by volcanic eruptions. Despite the volcanic activity, Wakenfield is a safe place to live, and all four active volcanoes are ‘Smokers’ (such as Mount Etna) rather than ‘Time Bombs’, as are the 2 volcanoes not own by the Wakenfieldite government. The other 2 volcanoes are extinct, and the one currently owned by the Wakenfieldite government is being used for advanced mining (which is the main income of the country) and is sited for even more advanced mining projects, bringing extra income to the country.

The beaches of the country are often referred to as ‘The best silver beaches in the world’. The beaches are almost all rocky, with one small exposed one on a spit on the western side of the island. However, as traditional holidaying by the beach is unheard of in Wakenfield, it is rarely used, and is sometimes called ‘Se Clif hlǣw’ (‘The Cliff Mound’)

The island is a very hilly one, and even mountainous in places, and tends to have huge forests over rolling hills, with the sight of a steaming volcano in the background and the occasional roar of a geyser. This is often regarded as an ‘Active Yellowstone’. Unfortunately, huge forests, windy hills and volcanic parks tend to add up to huge forest fires. However, with some of the fastest growing trees in existence, the barren landscape created by such a disaster is quickly returned to its normal self.

One notatable disater was the 'Grēot Fȳrbeorg' erpution. The Volcano was presumed long extict, but within 5 miniutes of the first danger signs the volcano had leveled a small town with a pyroclastic surge with the force of an atomic bomb, and had dealt major damage to the local regional government capital. The Volcano is now currently active.
