The Federated Gunnlandian States of Capitollium

The Federated Gunnlandian States of Capitollium is a large nation in NS Europe that embraces an ideology mixture of libertarianism and a realistic approach to foreign policy. Gunnlandia is a member of the Free Market States, Europe's preeminent capitalist alliance. It is also the founder of the Conference of Western Nations, an association of western countries, and the Kalmar Union, an alliance of Nordic states.

Geography

The Fatherland, or mainland Gunnnlandia, has plains in the south and highlands in the North. Crotia and Arkhangelskaya are both swampy lowland regions, while Shahlep is a desert. The largest city in the Federation is Dalmyre, folllowed by the Southern port city of Arkhangelsk.

The FGSC borders Wazistan, Christianan, Erlangen-Ansbach, Adelyne, and Bradivenland.

Political

The Gunnlandian political center is moderate libertarianism, with libertarians in control of the country's government since the Revolution. As times change, the nation occasionally has a propensity to swing rightward. The last elections gave the Libertarian-Conservative Alliance (LCA) a majority in the Federal Congress with 135/500 seats.

Current Seats:

135 Libertarian-Conservative Alliance (LCA) - Fmr. Cmdr. James Starke

127 Catholic Nationalist Party (CNP) - Ctzn. Cgsm. Patrick Fallon

108 Libertarian Party of Gunnlandia (LPG) - First Ctzn. Robert Wynne

076 Liberal Center Party (LCP) - Foreign Sec. James Ryder

045 Socialist Party of Gunnlandia (SPG) - Ctzn. Cgsm. Christopher MacGuire

009 Other Parties/Independent

Government

The Federation has a constitutional government with limited powers. The Constitution lays these out, but is not the supreme law of the land. The "Basic Declaration of Rights and Freedoms", a list of negative rights penned in the 1700s, has been adopted as an inviolable code of law that supercedes all others.

Most of the power in the Federation lies in the Federal Congress, a 500 member legislature. Currently, a minarchist coalition of Libertarian-Conservatives, Libertarians, and Liberal Centrists control the Congress. The Federal Congress passes laws, appropriates funds, ratifies treaties, declares war, and can override executive vetos with a 3/5 plurality. The members are called "Citizen Congressmen (Ctzn. Cgsm.)" or "Citizen Congresswomen (Ctzn. Cgsw)". The Congress elects the First Citizen. The leader of Congress is the Chancellor.

The First Citizen is the executive of the country and head of state, is the supreme military commander, and can veto acts of Congress. He or she has an Executive Cabinet of twelve other individuals, including ranking military officials, the intelligence cheif, trade officials, secretaries of various ministries (called Secretariats), the minority party leader (called the Whip), and the Chancellor of Congress.

The final branch of government is the Constitutional Court, an independent judiciary elected by the people for life terms that can only rule on matters of Constitutional law.

Cultural

Gunnlandian culture is based on a backbone of a conservative class of landowning yeoman farmers. A largely agrarian society, it prizes individual liberty and work ethic. Minorities and women are often excluded from parts of Gunnlandian society dominated by traditional Gunnishmen, and international groups criticize the fact no women have been electe to the Federal Congress north of the Fennbridge. Only eleven of the five hundred members are women, and most women in the rural states do not vote, though they are enfranchised.

Liberals also criticize treatment of minorities. Gunnishmen and Sutherlanders have traditionally been at odds, the latter being a sort of subjugated people for most of Gunnlandia's united history. Less racial tension excists with the people of Ghasa and the Fennbridge, recently incorporated. Poor immigrants, often forced to work in menial service jobs (in many cases as domestic servants) are often cited by international groups as being persecuted unfairly. Most poor immigrants come from Arkhangelsk, Ghasa, Shahlep, Crotia, and other Gunnlandian territories.

Economic

Gunnlandia has one of the strongest economies in Europe, diversified in agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. Many service based industries exist and the tertiary sector is rising due to the location of the Free Market Stock Exchange in Wyndhaven. Gunnlandia also has the largest shipping fleet and is the home of Gunnar Seaguard, the largest shipping company in Europe. The Federation maintains a series of ports throughout Europe in a free-trade alliance known as the FTA, or Federative Trade Association.

The nation's main trading partners are Kheion, Azores, and Qantrix. Other important economic links include Daracnia, Wazistan, Erlangen-Ansbach, Twente, and Great Brittania. Most of these are connected to the Federation through the FMS-ACE Trade Pact or the Federative Trade Association.
