The 2145 Heartland cyclone season officially runs from March 1 to November 1 (February 14 to December 14 in some areas), although these dates just conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in The Heartland. This season, the first storm, Subtropical Storm Veiru, formed on February 5 in an area where the season starts on March 1.

Pre-season predictions

Three sets of pre-season predictions were released; the first, on November 18, 2144, was released by the Lox Land Island Weather Observatory, and called for 10 depressions, 8 tropical storms and 3 hurricanes. The official preseason forecast from the Liverpool England Met Service's Hurricane Prediction Centre called for 10 tropical storms, of which 4 would be hurricanes and one would break the Category 3 mark. The final pre-season forecast was released on January 9, and was the most pessimistic of all, released by experts at the Orean College of Meteorology in Orean. It noted that due to La Niña around 17 depressions would form, of which 11 would make Tropical Storm strength, 9 hurricane strength, three major hurricanes and at least one super-hurricane, a new term adopted by the MSHPC for Category 5 hurricanes.

Storms

Hurricane Veiru

Latest advisory: TD01 (2145)

A non-tropical area of low pressure, embedded in a trough northwest of Cokekila, was first spotted on February 3. Over time a gale centre developed, and by February 5 north of North Boston, Cokekila, the system had detached itself from the trough and gained enough tropical characteristics to be designated Subtropical Storm Veiru. Later that day, it had gained full tropical characteristics and had turned northwards towards Dashake, prompting the emergency release of hurricane warnings for the Dashake coast. By 4 pm local time, the storm had strengthened into a hurricane. Nearing the Dashake coast, localised flooding was reported in some areas, along with three casualties. It strengthened into a Category Two hurricane early the next morning. At 4 am local time, it made landfall. 81 fatalities were reported in the three hours from when it became a Category 2 storm to landfall. Following landfall, the storm turned sharply west-northwest, as had been predicted. Seven people were killed by flying debris and falling trees in Sealdre after the storm started moving away. With at least 121 deaths so far reported from this storm, Veiru has become the deadliest storm in Heartland history from the onset of official warnings - with far more deaths reported than the 40 from 2135's Cyclone Donna.

Tropical Storm George

Latest advisory: TD02 (2145)

Late on February 5, while most attention was focused on Hurricane Veiru, a disturbed area of low pressure that the MSHPC had been monitoring gained enough sustained windspeed to be classified a tropical depression, marking what seemed to be an extraordinarily active pre-season. Early February 6, the storm lost strength and a final advisory was issued. However, the storm had not lost circulation, and not too much later, at 8:30 am HPT (9 am local time), the MSHPC issued an advisory saying the storm had undergone rapid strengthening and was almost a tropical storm. By the 12 pm HPT update, the storm had strengthened into Tropical Storm George. 5 deaths have been reported from this system so far.

2145 storm names

Storms are named by nations within the Liverpool England Area of Responsibility; 16 nations submitted names to name cyclones with in 2140. In 2145, the name contributed by Upper Biswald was struck from the list. Only storms of tropical storm strength get named; if the 15 names run out, the list reverts to the old pre-2140 naming scheme. Unused names are greyed out; the first one this season will be Veiru. Active storms are bolded.

Retirement

Names are retired for strong negative connotations due to damage, deaths caused or political sensitivity. If any of the 15 pre-submitted names are retired, the nation is asked to submit a new name. If any of the other standard names are retired, a name from the backup list is used to replace the retired name. Names retired will be decided on in December 2145.
