Overview
The United Socialist States of Apoptygma Berzerk is a very large, safe nation, remarkable for its complete lack of prisons. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 141 million are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Religion & Spirituality and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 89%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Cheese Exports.
The government is spending millions on renovating the public transportation system, drunk drivers are sent to rehabilitation paid for by the government, it is illegal for police officers to carry out searches due to strict privacy laws, and Max Barry is this year's Miss Apoptygma Berzerk. Crime is totally unknown. Apoptygma Berzerk's national animal is the ocelot, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the pop-tart.
