The Grand Duchy of Arrakis Minor is a small and relatively young country, located in the south of Europe. It was recently able to settle into a reasonable, albeit unstable sense of government after decades of strife caused by a sudden and massive increase in immigration by foreign businesses, looking to harness and harvest the natural resources of the region, called Arrakis by its natives.

Internationally, Arrakis Minor has yet to make any real contributions, and remains relatively unknown, having trouble even getting on the map. However, as it's progressive business policies unfold, and its precious exports begin to flow, those who have personal stakes in this newly created nation hope not to be disappointed.

Etymology

Arrakis

The word Arrakis comes from the Arrakan word الراقص ar-rāqiṣ, "the dancer". It was named by the native population in ancient times in regards to their pre-Islamic pagan beliefs. They believed that their people shared a special connection to this star, because of it's location to the constellation Draco. At this point in time, (some 2500 BCE) Draco constellation contained the pole star, Thuban. The people believed that the star Arrakis was the centre of a constellation beside Draco, the dancer, and the warrior who had felled the great dragon, creating the earth. Thusly, they named their land after this great fictional hero.

Minor

During the Great Entrance, the Native Arrakan culture was influenced by many other immigrant cultures. Although slightly xenophobic, they eventually after years of fighting began to create the nation that presently exists. It is unknown however, the exactly meaning of the "Minor". Some speculate that it is because with emerging technology and astrology, the Arrakans learned just how small and minor they were compared to the star. Other sources suggest that it was given this because the immigrants did not seem to comprehend at the start how vast the deserts of Arrakis "Minor" were.
