The Dictatorship of Baltran is a small nation located in Atlantian Oceania.

History

The Baltrese were originally a nomadic, militant people. Over thousands of years, they began to settle down and form city-states around 300 BC. These city-states were still constantly at war, stabbing each other in the back any chance they got. Four times during the ensuing 2200 years the entire area was under the control of two or three nations, before these collapsed into anarchy. In 1902, one nation became the dominant force, occupying the entire eastern side of the area. The Free Republic of Baltran thrived, being relatively strong, independent, and, for the first time ever, stable. The Republic was well-governed under a series of able Presidents. In 1999, an uprising in the West prompted a mobilization of the army. General Amos Robinson was placed at the head of the Republican Army. He led an able assault on the rebels, but was killed in a daring suicide run by the Rebellion. William Johnson was promoted to General of the Army. He quickly became very popular with the army, as he led them from victory to victory over the rebellion. When the rebels were crushed at Hearthville in December, 2002, the civil war was over. Johnson took his national army and marched on Baltranopolis, declaring himself ruler of Baltran, and demanded the surrender of the Republican officials. The officials initially refused, but when faced with a riot in front of the Republican Palace and with the Army turning to Johnson's side, they complied. The officials were all executed on January 1, 2003, and the reign of the twenty-five-year-old General William Johnson had begun.

Baltran is a military dictatorship, ruled with an iron fist by General William Johnson. All dissension is brutally and quickly crushed by the army. The sole governing party is the dictator and his panel of advisors.

Demographics

Until recently, the Baltrese were relatively unreligious. However, soon after Johnson took power, a religion appeared in the far west. Yonism is a militant religion, and many of its members are part of paramilitary groups or the army. For many of the more conservative elements in the east, Yonism is to be feared.

Roughly 23% of the Baltrese are atheist or agnostic, 15% are Christian, 19% are Islamic, and 43% are Yonist. 79% of the people are ethnic Baltrese, and the other 21% are immigrants.
