It is the only region in South Nashville that has a bicameral assembly, one of three regions to subdivide further with 32 counties with their own charters and local functions, and one of the only two regions in which the Speaker can call snap elections.

It is home to the South Nashville Stock Exchange (SNSE) and home to the military base Ft. Campbell.

Charter and Politics

The Brentwood charter establishes a bicameral legislature made up of the Common Assembly and the Second Assembly. The Common Assembly is made up of 75 members who are elected from proportional single member districts. The Second Assembly is made up of 32 members elected from each county.

All legislation is introduced in the Common Assembly and is debated, requiring a simple majority to pass. It is then sent to the Second Assembly who debates it and then votes on it. If it does not recieve a majority, it is sent back to the Common Assembly, otherwise it becomes law. The Common Assembly then debates the bill and then votes on it and it must recieve an absolute majority to become law.

The Common Assembly elects a Speaker who serves as the leader of the Assembly and the chief executive of the region. The Speaker also has the authority to call snap elections of the entire Assembly. This dates back to the Constituional Era and the Tax Riots.

The Brentwood regional government is also responsible for local regional functions such as health care, housing, and education.

Ft. Campbell

An early foundation of the city, it has served various military purposes including as an army base, naval base, and today in its current function as a joint army and air force base, home to the 101st Airborne. It has had several locations around the city, moving as the city continued to outgrow its limits.
