The Reunited Empire of Byzantium Nova is a massive, safe nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, cynical population of about 1.5 billion are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Law & Order, although Defence and Education are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 100%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.
The police have reaffirmed their tough stance on drugs, the government is spending millions on renovating the public transportation system, meat is a luxury afforded only to the wealthy, and people who are terrified of needles are torn between their phobia and free health care. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Byzantium Nova's national animal is the Eagle, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the solidus.
