History

The Library of Codex is estimated to be roughly 1,800 years old, though it has been recognised as a nation for less than half this time. Its origins are thought to date back to one man; Saris Amonoen, a Walker of the Great Path. Whilst his early life is largely unknown to us, it is clear that some time during his journey, he came into possession of the Codex of Sihon, the dead God of Knowledge. The exact nature of the Codex is unknown, as, indeed, is how exactly the God of Knowledge is dead, but it is reputed to contain all the knowledge in the universe. Unfortunately, any means of indexing or searching the Codex was lost, both to Saris and to scholars now. It also has the property of driving insane anyone exposed to it for too long, a factor that contributes to making its detailed study very difficult. Nonetheless, its discovery was still a matter of great importance. Upon completion of the Great Path, Saris did not return to the Assembly, as was expected, but instead set out upon a new path, one laid down by the Codex.

The exact circumstances of the founding of Codex are unknown. It is believed that Saris gathered together a collection of scholars and mages, including certain members of the Assembly. Seeking a place to establish a new nation, they travelled the world for a period of roughly 80 years, before coming upon the island upon which Codex rests now. Here, they formed the first capital city of Idria, in the centre of the forests towards the island's centre.

The city of Idria flourished for a period of roughly 100 years, attracting scholars from nearby nations. Though a somewhat ruthless system that placed knowledge as the sole virtue, Idria developed into a city devoted to the gathering, development, and ultimately worship of knowledge. Whilst Saris and his apprentices continued to study the Codex, the vast majority of Idria was now devoted to the expansion of knowledge by more traditional methods.

The beginning of Codex's second century saw also the beginning of the first fall. Little of the history of this time remains in publically accessible archives; and much of the following is speculation. However, it is surmised that around the 110th year IE (Idrian Establishment), a group of largely non-academic citizens made an assault upon the central chamber, where the Codex of Sihon was held and studied. The attempt failed, but inflamed an increasing ideological divide between the initial founders of Idria and the community that had developed to serve them. Seeing the need for an official govenment where none had been before, the central group of mages, with the support of most of the scholars and a powerful group of non-academic citizens nonetheless devoted to the Idrian ideals, formed a body for the governance of the city and surrounding provinces. It is from this initial body that the Library gained both its title and its name, adopting that from the Codex of Sihon.

Codex has been a Member in good standing of the East Pacific for many many months.
