Notable
The first of three Emperor's whose short reigns are collectively known as the "Years of Sorrow." Restricted the powers of the barons and the Council of Lords.

Emperor Daniel II ascended the throne following the death of his brother, Samuel II, who died without a legal heir. Daniel, in turn, died at the age of 49 after only four years on the throne. While the Emperor is believed to have died from a heart attack, some have speculated that he may have been poisoned. During his brief reign, Daniel's one significant accomplishment was to promote the powers of the Imperial Senate at the expense of the barons and the Council of Lords. This led to an atmosphere of hostility between the nobility and the Sword and has led some to believe that the Emperor may have been poisoned by one or more of the barons.

At the time of his death, Daniel's son - who would eventually reign as David II - was judged to be too young to ascend the throne. Following a long and often bitter debate between the weakened Council of Lords, the bishops of the Church of Excalbia and the Senate, Daniel's brother - the third son of Emperor Daniel I and Daniel II's fraternal twin - took the throne as David I.
