Descartesland is a young, developing nation founded by Cailean Adair in 2003. The territory occupied by Descartesland was originally part of its neighbor states: Fellesenia, Orason, and Moorseville, but constant warfare weakened them to the point that a people's uprising led by then 23 year old Adair captured several key cities including Erringore. A loose coalition of cities was founded, which was then consolidated by President Adair into the nation of Descartesland, under his rule. In the following 4 years, Descartesland has grown rapidly and rebuild the war torn land into a bustling nation. The countries Military Industrial Complex was taken over from the former nations of the land it occupies. Descartesland's largest cities are the cities that were the least damaged during the 100 Years War.

Founder and Formation

President Adair is a believer of Descartian philosophy. His policies have earned him the position of "President". The people have elected to grant him that position for his entire life.

While he is still quite young at age 27, he has experience beyond his years. Having been born to the former Royal Family of Fellesenia, he watched his family slaughtered by the forces of Orason when he was 13. At that point, he fled to the hills and mountainous regions of Moorseville and began gaining support with his theories of creating a separate nation from any of the three surrounding nations. After several key military leaders of Orason began to see the folly of constant war, Adair recruited them into his movement. In doing so, he gained the support of over 75% of the Orason military. With these forces under his command he moved on Erringore and New Dublin and captured them. After freeing the residents, they joined his cause and he territory controlled by Adair's forces grew. He decreed that any city that a majority of residents felt they would like to join his confederacy would be accepted, and those not agreeing would be allowed to leave. In 3 months, his territory doubled in size to just slightly larger then what is currently controlled.

After securing his nation's borders, Adair suggested a direct democratic form of government and set up an election. The people of this newly formed nation decided instead to give him unilateral control and elected him as President for the rest of his natural life.

1st Border War

Shortly after forming the government and setting up his governmental seat in Erringore on a former Military base, Fellensia and Orason attacked. While Descartesland still had a decent military force, the swift attack pushed into the borders with military forces making it as far as 300 miles into Descartesland's interior and razing all the territory they crossed. President Adair and his top military leader's decided to ask Moorseville for military assistance. This request was granted, in exchange for the return of some territory taken during the original insurgency. With the assistance of the Moorse and two nuclear strikes on Orason's largest military complex, the 1st Border War was over.

2nd Border War

While the military victory in the 1st Border War proved that Descartesland could defend it's borders, Fellesenia and Orason were not satisfied with their lost territory. Even Moorseville was not happy, having lost large sums of resource rich land in the creation of Descartesland. Two years after the 1st Border War, all three nations began airstrikes and cruise missile attacks, preparing for direct military assault. This time, Descartesland was prepared. Unknown to the attackers, Descartesland has reactivated a missile defense system that was left in place by Fellesenia as well as launched several Surveillance satellites. Casualties in Descartesland were little to none and 2/3rds of the attackers were destroyed in the first three days of Descartesland's retaliation. Fellesenia was effectively disarmed, and Orason's nuclear and conventional missile systems were completely destroyed. Moorseville was almost entirely devastated, because in the ending hours of the war, Orason launched nuclear strikes on them in an attempt to make it appear that Descartesland was using nuclear arms against civilians.

Treaty of Korolyov City

The leaders of all three attacking nations and President Adair and his aide, Ms. Aiden O'Doherty met in Korolyov city to negotiate an end to the wars. The borders were permanently drawn as they stand today, and military buildup levels were decided on. There is currently a shaky peace between all 4 nations, but they do not maintain permanent embassies.

Current Events

Descartesland has been flourishing in the year since the Treaty of Korolyov City. The space program has been continuing on, and the borders are secure. There have been several skirmishes and border misunderstandings in the last year, all of which have been prevented from breaking into all out war by the negotiations of The Foreign Ministry. The Department of Military Control has been keeping a close eye on the surrounding nations.

Most recently, Descartesland and Candelaria And Marquez founded the International Space Programme.

Mission

Descartesland strives to stay neutral in all conflicts that the nation can. Descartesland extends its land as a neutral nation for any negotiations between hostile nations. Descartesland will also open its borders to refugees as needed.

Governmental Setup

When Cailean Adair founded Descartesland, the people ratified a constitution that makes him the nation's President indefinitely. While this puts him in a dictatorial position, he offered the population a chance to vote on elections; they were outlawed. The government is referred to as "Central Control" and is based in the Governmental Complex in Erringore. The Government is compartmentalized, with all department heads being members of the Central Control Council, headed by President Adair.

Central Control's policies are strongly anti-business, focusing on & Order, although Defense and Commerce are on the agenda as well. Current issues at hand involve taxation of the public, internal country security, and over population by the nation's national animal, the Platypus.

Governmental Departments and Responsibilites

President's Office

This is the head of the Government. All decisions must come through this department.

Military Control

This department controls Descartesland's military. It is headed by the second highest military official in the nation (the first is President Adair).

Homeland Control

This department controls all Homeland defense issues, including police forces, militias, and paramilitary forces.

Economic Control

This department controls all economic policy of the nation. All business licenses must be issued through Economic Control. The enforcement branch of this department is referred to as the Revenue Police Force. These agents tend to be a tad ruthless in the enforcement of Descartesland's Economic Policies.

Foreign Ministry

This department controls all of Descartesland's interaction with foreign nations. All embassies are issued through this department. Any official communiques from Descartesland will be issued through this department.

            History: Finlay Sheehan started out in a poor family living in a small city outside of Erringore.  He joined the military to "get ahead".  
            During The First Border War, he served with distinction and was recommended for Officership.  From there he progressed through the ranks due 
            to natural talent.

            Age: 54
            Familial Status: Married, 2 children
            History: Served with distinction in the Erringore Police Force until making Chief.  President Adair recognized his talent and 
            elevated him to office.
       Head of Economic Control: Dr. Mackenzie O'Dwyer
            Age: 67
            Familial Status: Married, 4 children
            History: Dr. O'Dwyer was a favorite professor at the University of Erringore.  Her classes in economy produced many great economists.  
            President Adair was a former student and recognizing her brilliance, brought her into his inner circle.  She still serves as a matronly
            figure to him and he respects her advice above all of his other council members.

            Age: 26
            Familial Status: Unmarried, currently associated with President Adair.
            History: While her critics claim she only gained her office due to her relationship with President Adair, she earned it of her own 
            merits.  She passes the public service exam with an unprecedented perfect score, showing extreme aptitude for diplomacy.  
            She has successfully chosen successful ambassadors and helped negotiate the conclusion of an ongoing war between several of 
            Descartesland's neighbors.

Military

While the nation is neutral, it believes in a strong military force and a strong weapons research program. Descartesland is a nuclear capable nation and has a missile defense network to prevent missile attacks.

Descartesland conventional military is made up of the National Defense Force (NDF). Descartesland maintains three departments, Ground Command, Air Command, and Naval Command. Descartesland Special Forces units are referred to as Special Units. At this time, there is no information available on military size.

Foreign Policy

Descartesland strives to be entirely neutral in all wars. Only in extreme cases will Descartesland step in to a foreign war, and only then if there are atrocious war crimes going on. Any aggression will be met and rebuffed by the NDF. Only in extreme cases will Descartesland retaliate against another nation, and only then against military targets.

Descartesland extends embassy space to any non-belligerent, non-aggressive nation. These embassies are maintained in the Governmental Complex to guarantee the safety of foreign diplomats. Descartesland also attempts to establish as many embassies abroad as possible. In doing so, Descartesland hopes to be able to help in negotiations in any wars that might break out.

Major Cities

Erringore

Erringore is the capitol of Descartesland. The current population of the city is 1 million. The nation's largest university, Erringore University is located here. Unfortunately, Erringore has grown too quickly and pollution is a problem.

The Governmental Complex is located in the center of Erringore. All governmental functions are decided from this location. It is a heavily fortified, walled, inner city.

New Dublin

New Dublin is a nation on Descartesland's coast. It is the largest port of Descartesland and the home port of Naval Command.

Korolyov City

Named after a space pioneer from the old country, Korolyov City is the center of Descartesland's space programs. From here, the nation's Cosmonauts are launched into space. Korolyov city also maintains uplinks to all of Descartesland's space based platforms.

Space Program

While Descartesland's space program is still in it's infancy, science from the old country and the pushing of President Adair is leading to a rapid boom. Currently, Descartesland's Cothrom class rockets are topped with reusable capsules capable of carrying a crew of three into orbit.

Space Platforms

Currently, the largest platforms in Descartesland's space program are only able to house 3 cosmonauts for up to a month at a time. These platforms are mainly for research and for use as a staging area for further space exploration. Currently, Platform K1 is being used to prepare for a mission to the moon.

Satellites

Cothrom-class rockets are capable of launching two satellites into orbit at a time. Currently, Descartesland has several hundred artificial satellites in orbit. These are mainly communications satellites, but there is an unknown percentage of military satellites in orbit used to detect missile launches.

Social Information

Political Freedoms

The government voted to outlaw the political freedoms of its citizens. While there are a few dissidents to this policy, they are admitted to free reeducation camps to inform them that it is for the best.

Civil Rights

Along with political freedoms, civil rights are few. The citizens of Descartesland are understanding of this policy.

Economy

Descartesland's economy is not encouraging of private sector enterprise. The government's view on most private industry is that it should be stamped out.

Trade

Descartesland has a rich mining industry. Due to the discovery of large amounts of precious metals and uranium, Descartesland has a rich market for trading in metallurgical resources

Arms Manufacturing

Though striving to stay neutral in all foreign wars, Descartesland manufactures weapons on a regular basis. Military technologies are available for trade to non-belligerent and non-aggressive nations.
