The United Socialist States of Eketraine is a huge, safe nation, remarkable for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate, cynical population of 710 million are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Social Welfare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 82%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Uranium Mining.

The study of medicine is popular throughout Eketraine, every product goes through extensive safety-testing by the government, Max Barry is this year's Miss Eketraine, and public loudspeakers constantly tell citizens they are "happy people". Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Eketraine's national animal is the bear and its currency is the rouple.

History

Founding

Eketraine was originally founded on the 28th of May 1876, in the temperate, yet damp climate of Eastern Europe. Founded by General Uri Viktor Opalivic, following the famous Defects of January in which he and his army, which had been disbanded by Trodenhiem following its failure to capture Archensis, had defected from Trodenhiem.

The General and his followers spent the next year threatening the government of Trodenhiem, until they finally gave in and awarded the General and his now large following, the large area of ex-Northern Trodenhiem. Initially the General ran the new nation of Eketraine as a democracy, in which people would run to be elected as Prime Minister, however following the Vote Buying Scandal of 1895 he decided to abandon this system.

There was no objedction to this move, as no formal constitution for Eketraine had ever been written, nor suggested, and the now aging General took charge declaring himself King of Eketraine.

During this period the soldiers that had founded Eketraine disarmed and with thier families they settled to a farming lifestyle. This made farming Eketraine's main industry, and they provided grain, wheat and barley to Trodenhiem. However in 1897 following an extensive geological survey of the nation, Oil and Iron were found, and many people moved to cities in the central plains, to get the secure and well paid jobs as miners and factory workers. Farming still maintained its position, however the farms were vast and Extensive, rather than the small Intensive farms that originally covered the landscape.

Metal Refineries sprung up all over Eketraine and many wealthy Entrepeneurs came to the fore from Eketraine, and the value of the Rouple doubled. However discontent spread rapidly as the wealthy consumed all of the money, and so little of Eketraine's money made it into the hands of the common worker. The new King Uri, did little to stop this, and the situation became dire, poverty became rife and the people of Eketraine began to rebel.

The Archangralesk Marches of 1908

Things changed in September 1908 with the worker's marches in Archangralesk. The workers started a peaceful protest on the 25th marching with banners and flags through the streets of the city, demanding change, higher wages, and more rights to the worker. However the response was poor, the wealthy factory owners took to the whip, and beat the workers in the factories, they hired thugs to break up the marches and began to rampantly fire the workers in favour of the cheap labourers coming in from the now crippled nation of Northern Trodenhiem. On the 27th however the marches continued much to the dismay and surprise of the rich. The same happened again, the thugs came out, but this time the workers were prepared, they had taken up arms, gathered the outdated weapons that were left all over Eketraine following the disarmament of thier fathers.

There was a massive fight in the streets, between the protesters and the thugs, and the peaceful march turned into a two day riot that rocked the city.

The riots only ended on the 30th when the army was called in by the King, who had only just heard about the happenings the day before. The army entered the city, and forcively broke up the riots, by firing into the crowds. Hundreds were left dead, and the King made an announcement over the radio, making his intention to stamp out this dissent clear. Needless to say the nation was in uproar.

The Red October

The 1st of October saw the rise of Vladmir Korokov, a middle class merchant who had been hard hit by the recent povertyand depression that had overcome the nation.

His rhetoric captured the hearts of the people, and he spoke of bold things such as over throwing the monarchy, and forming a new democratic government, that would ensure the redistribution of wealth and the rights of the worker.

People flocked to the cause, and Korokov travelled all over Eketraine making speeches, and expounding rhetoric on the plight and oppression of the nation. The workers all over the nation rose in fury and rage, arming themselves with whatever they could lay thier hands on, and went to Archangralesk.

The Red December

The 8th of December saw Eketraine's citizens openly revolt against thier government. Massive riots in major cities and towns across Eketraine brought the nation to its knees. The military was defecting and joining thier families, and when General Vlad Voldovic, Eketraine's most senior General, announced his alleigance to Vladmir Korokov, following the Kinbg's announcement that he would suppress the violence with excessive force if need be.

With Voldovic's influence and power on his side, Korokov had virtual control of most of the military. The riots damaged trillions of dollars worth of damage to infrastructure and private property over its three week period.

At the end of the three weeks of violence the king stood firm, barricaded in his palace in Archangralesk, his personal bodyguard of 50 was all that stood between him and the rest of the nation. He walked out onto the balconey with the white flag of surrender held high, he shuffled some papers and cleared his throat, ready to make a speech, and then there was a series of gunshots, and the king fell from the balconey into the crowd. The guards ran around the gunman, Captain Horace Hynerion of the Royal Guard and cut him down with thier ceremonial swords.

The crowd stormed the palace, the guards were easily overpowered and the palace sacked. The royal family was thrown into the street where they ran and dissappeared. Aristocrats all over the nation were murdered in the remainder of the month and at the end one man stood tall. Vladmir Korokov by common consent became Eketraine's new leader, and he instigated a communist regime with the help of General Vlad Voldovic.
