Fort Europe

The Commonwealth Nation of Fort Europe is located on the picturesque East Coast of Larrisa, a small continent near the equator of The Brave New World. The nation has a long and coloured history, which is apparent in its architecture and culture. Fort Europe is devided into six provinces which are listed below.

The Commonwealth

Fort Europe is the primary of several nations that make up The Commonwealth. Because of its position and size the Commonwealth's seat of power is located in Stape, Fort Europe's capital city.

National Council

While the Great Leader is the supreme ruler of The Commonwealth, Fort Europe is governed by a National Council which deals with all internal issues. The elected Chairperson of the National Council represents Fort Europe in the Commonwealth Council. The six seats at the National Council of Fort Europe are filled by the chairpersons from each of the six provinces.

Province Councils

Fort Europe is devided into six provinces, each of which has it's own council for dealing with minor issues that relate to their specific areas such as infestructure maintainance. The members of these councils are made up of representitives from local authorities, organisations and buisnesses. The elected Chairperson of each Province Council represents their province in the National Council.

Military

Fort Europe provides The Commonwealth Armed Forces with approximately 40% of it's personnel on which it is reliant on for the security and defence of the nation. The Commonwealth Armed Forces are also responsible for the Police and Medical services in Fort Europe.

Sports

There are many sports played with Fort Europe at all levels, under the authority of the Commonwealth Events and Sports Organisation. Because of the popularity of some sporting competitions, each of The Commonwealth's member nations has its own national teams which compete on an international level. Professional domestic sports leagues are combined however with only the amature leagues seperated by national boundries. Fort Europes most popular sports are listed below.

Football

Football is the most popular sport in Fort Europe and draws large crouds for matches at all levels. The National team is highly regarded as the best in the Commonwealth, and a major competitor in The Brave New World.

Hockey

Hockey has spread throught Fort Europe, with each province having its own team. The sport doesn't draw the same crouds as Football, but it is slowly catching up.

Ice Hockey

Popularity for this sport is growing, particularly with the nations youth. The number of teams limited by the small number of ice rinks in the nation however the CESO has plans to expand the number of ice rinks in Fort Europe with in the next few years.

History

Early Larissa

Little is known about the beginning of civilisation on the continent of Larissa, though there is evidence that several nomadic tribes traversed the warm shallow waters of the Lasting Sea in search of food and resources. The majority of these tribes originated from the nations of Styrland and Carinthe and over time these tribes settled. In the East of the continent two main tribes settled known as The Bovi and The Europa. The Bovi are considered by most to have been a fearsom tribe of warriors and hunters while evidence has shown the Europa to be more defencive, building great fortresses around their villages. As both tribes grew they expanded into the surounding lands, making use of the rich environment that surrounded them. The Europa spread fast, building their forts across the landscape of rolling hills first out of wood, then later out of stone and soon came to call the nation they had created as Fortress Europa.

Mekhule

Almost a century later, the expansion of Fortress Europa lead them south in a race against their neibouring tribe, The Bovi, to reach the mouth of the River San. It was there accross the River San that the two tribes confronted each other in open combat. The tribes had fought before in minor skirmishes accross their borders, though nothing on such a scale. Some four hundred men and women from each tribe took up arms is a battle that in the end lasted not more than an hour. The battle resulted in hundreds of deaths on both sides and no winner was declared. The fight for the lands at the mouth of the River San would be the first of many such battles between the two sides over an area that they would later name Mekhule from the native tongue of The Bovi meaning Exterminaton.

Bovingtonian Occupation

The war against The Bovi lasted for a total of four decades, yet it was only in the last two years that the war turned against The Europa and their enemies left their lands known as Bovingtonia in a full invasion. The loss of life suffered by the Europa during the years before had left them with little defence against the invading army. The Europa were slaughtered with any resistance being punished by the burning of whole villages. The Bovi were ruthless in their advance and soon pushed all the way through to the East Coast. Few remnants of the ancient Europa civilisation still stand today, the rest either burnt during the invasion or destroyed later to make way for the new. The stone walls and forts however remain, their ruins scattered accross the landscape. The Bovi didn't stop there however, their leader Marcus Auli named himself Emperor of Bovingtonia, and began a campaign that would expand the nation into what has now become known as the Bovingtonian Empire.

The Rebellion

By the later end of the fith century of the Bovingtonian Empire it covered almost half of the continent of Larissa. It bordered the Empire of Jeianga to the West, and Kellertopia to the North. The expansion had also stretched as far as the previously unoccupied island chain of Saldanha on the east coast. The cost of such an Empire however was felt by its people who were heavily taxed to pay for the continued expansion.
