Grant Maximilian Foster (born 17 December 1981, in Najaster, Kahanistan) was a Kahanistanian military officer, thrust into prominence by revealing Amestrian war crimes to the Xirniumite media, and to the world.
Early life
Grant Foster was born in Najaster, the capital of Kahanistan, to a middle-class socialist family. As a child he was always interested in gardening, growing his first radish plants at age six. In school he was fascinated by plant biology, in which he excelled. In 1992, when Grant was ten, his father was injured in a terrorist attack, which motivated him to join the Republic Guard when he was old enough to defend his country.
Military training
Foster joined the Kahanistan Military Academy in the 1995-96 school year, when he was thirteen. Because of his high grades in biology, he was trained as a sanitation specialist for most of the eight years he attended the academy. Like all Kahanistanian officer candidates, Foster was trained to uphold the belief in universal human rights enshrined in the Constitution of Kahanistan and the Geneva and Hague Conventions. As a mostly non-combat soldier, he never experienced the shocks and traumas which often push soldiers over the edge. He graduated 16th in his class in 2003, becoming a second lieutenant in the Republic Guard.
Career
Most of Foster's career was unremarkable; until December 2005 his only achievement was receiving a more or less automatic promotion to First Lieutenant in July 2004. As a sanitation specialist, his main duties were in implementing biological warfare protocols, but as Kahanistan had little experience with biological warfare, he was usually assigned to disposal of medical waste in military infirmaries, and destruction of potential biohazards, such as the bodies he would later be forced to burn for the Amestrians.
Torontian Question
Foster arrived in Torontia on 6 November 2005. While there, he was in command of a platoon of sanitation workers who maintained the military health regulations in his base, but was ordered to destroy bodies he suspected were murder victims. His fears were confirmed when Brigadier General Abdul Aziz Kantari gave him a copy of the Amestrian order, telling him never to obey it. Shortly thereafter, Foster joined two Xirniumite Intelligence agents and fled Torontia, later joined by an Imperial Marine, Cpl. Eileen Holland, and giving the Xirniumites and the world all the information he knew.
After Defection
For several weeks Foster and Holland were wanted, on charges of murdering and assaulting allied and Kahanistanian soldiers, dissemination of classified information, disobeying lawful orders, and other charges. However, shortly after the 2006 Kahanistan riots they were pardoned, promoted, and decorated, Foster receiving the rank of Captain and the decorations of Hero of the Democratic Soviet Republic of Kahanistan and Distinguished Service Cross, and Holland receiving the rank of Second Lieutenant and the decorations of Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star.
Foster served briefly in Kahanistan as a company commander during the Pwnage invasion, his sole combat experience. After the war, he and Holland went to Velkya on R&R.
