Harringdon is an important coastal harbour town in the Merway Hills in the southern extreme of Hart Districts and at the mouth of the river Orwell in the Grand Duchy of Maanenland.

History

Harringdon was settled by Anglo-Saxon merchants to carry market goods from Stretford across Ternlake. With greater communication and safer roads the port declined and the area instead became an importannt staging point for people travelling to the north-east.

Harringdon was traditionally a part of the Mounthattenshire territory but was moved into Greater Stretford in 1982 and will move into the Hart Districts in September 2006. It is still common for local people to refer to 'Mounthatten' when talking about the provincial government. The town still remains in Mounthatten Hundred.

Communications

The M2 runs 10 miles north-west of the town with a dual-carriage (A28920 - Acmere Road) connecting the town directly to the junction.

Harringdon is currently the smallest town in the nation to have a MaanenRail intercity railway terminus due it's position as centre of the local transport network with connections direct to Mounthatten Ridge (every hour) , Stretford (every half-hour) , Ternpool (every half-hour) and Jennington (every hour)

The nearest major international airport is 290 miles away in Stretford , there is however a major regional airport located 110 miles away at Acmere.

Economy

The local economy was traditionally tied to the harbour which is still the centre of the local economy with it's large fishing fleet which exports to the local area. Primary agriculture is also an important sector of the local economy.

There is no heavy industry left since the closure of BLElectronics plant in 2001 with the loss of 120 jobs , retail however has experianced a small boom recently as has the construction of a shipping repair facility in the habour built buy King & King Shipping.

Politics

Harringdon is in the electoral district of Camley-Harringdon and is represented by Doug Charles for the Liberal Democratic Party of Maanenland who is one of the longest serving Lieutenants in the parliament being elected in 1971.

Sport

Harringdon is a locally successful cricket team winning the Mounthattenshire Trophy for four years running. Harringdon Town FC currently plays in the Coastal League after being relegated last year from the Southern Stretford Cup.
