Mathilde

Overview

Mathilde is an asteroid in a high Martian orbit, 150,000km above the planet. It was placed in the orbit by Bryn Shander, and is used as a military base by the nation. Mathilde is also the seat of government for the Principality of Mathilde. Because of it's size, defensability, and strategic location, Mathilde is Bryn Shander's third largest military base behind A Baoa Qu and Axis, and is the site for the Hermes Alliance's Martian Project Hermes hyperspace gate.

Mathilde was accompanied in it's orbit by New Haven's asteroid base Orion at it's L3 point.

Trade

In addition to being a military hub, Mathilde is Bryn Shander's primary economic hub in the Mars system, with 90% of the nation's Martian trade passing through the asteroid at one point or another.

Shipyards

Mathilde has some of Bryn Shander's largest and busiest shipyards, with the nation's first Inverse Class super dreadnought produced in the largest of the asteroid's yards, and a second produced later at the same yard. Many of Bryn Shander's other ships were produced at Mathilde, and nearly a quarter of the nation's ships stationed at the base.

Military

Because it is designed to protect Bryn Shander's colonies, Mathilde is heavilly armed, with nearly a quarter of the nation's space fleet stationed at the asteroid, and extensive point defenses. In addition, a colony laser is in orbit around the asteroid to further add to the Mathilde's defensive capabilities.

Most recently, Mathilde has been outfitted with a number of heavy Mjolnir gun batteries for primarily anti-starship use.
