General Description
The Bloated Democracy of Merchandisia is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its punitive income tax rates. Its hard-nosed population of 1.87 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Education. The average income tax rate is 94%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Information Technology and Soda Sales.
Libraries are bulldozed to make way for internet cafés, people regularly disappear off the streets and all evidence of them is destroyed, much of Merchandisia's computer network is controlled by a rampant artificial intelligence, and retiring citizens are dragged away in the middle of the night by mysterious men in black suits. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is moderate. Merchandisia's national animal is the weasel, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the snotrag.
