Founding
The Most Serene Republic of Murkadia was founded as a colony of the Russian Empire within the Territories of the Borderlands region. Over time, ties with the mother country weakened as Murkadia became far more closely linked to the surrounding nations both economically and politically. A period of political unrest in Russia gave Murkadia the opportunity to declare indepence without fear of retaliation. Since that time the developing country has never looked back. Relations with with Russia are now essentially nonexistant.
The People
For the most part, Murkadians have rejected Russian political and economic systems while holding on to many of the religious and cultural aspects of their Russian heritage. To this day Russian Orthodox is the most dominate religion and the Russian language is the official language of the nation.

Government
The government is run by a Prime Minister elected by the Parliament for indefinite term lengths. A vote of no confidence in the Parliament will bring about elections for a new Prime Minister at any time. The Prime Minister and their cabinet essentially run the nation. Parliament controls the laws of the nation, but the Prime Minister can exert quite a bit of power on his own in this area through Executive Orders (which can in turn be overriden by the Parliament). Members of Parliament are elected every 4 years in single member district pluralities.

Current Government
Currently the Conservative Coalition (linking the Murkadian Nationalist Party and the Free Markets Party) controls the Parliament. Popular life-long politician and respected member of Nationalist Party, Fyodor Ivanovich Skorikov, was elected 2 years ago. Since that time he has led the government in making sweeping changes to the education system as well as streamlining welfare and administrative costs.
The chief opposition to the acting government comes from the Green Murkadia Party (GRP) which happens to be the nation's predominate left-wing party. While the GRP constitutes the greatest threat in terms of voteshare, the Russian Party is proving to be an increasingly militant threat. Leader of the Russian Party, Anton Noviskov, is considered a criminal by the Murkadian government which has forced him consequently into hiding. Allegedly, Noviskov is responsible for planning several terrorist attacks against government buildings. The Russian Party desires the nation to return to its previous state as a territory under the authority of the Russian government.
Geography
Murkadia is situated on the northwestern tip of the mainland in the Territories of the Borderlands region. The climate throughout the entire country is cold to freezing and most of the population resides in the more arable southern regions between the capital city of Muravinsk and the nation's most populated city, Krasnyi. The island of Klaipeda in the northeast is a frozen wasteland and is home to one of the most brutal military training camps in the region.
