Ancient New Genoa Island (called Ethericos by its inhabitants) was populated by a myriad of quarreling tribes, divided into six culture sets: the Eastern Tribes of Ethericos, the Western Tribes of Ethericos, the Lake Peoples of Ethericos, the Kallite state of Ethericos, the Tropic Tribes of Genoa Island, and the Blainon peoples of Blaine Island. Out of these many cultures, the Kallite state was the only true nation to emerge and form a civilized and highly developed nation. The Kallite state existed from about 200 BCE until its destruction in 1519 CE by Italian explorers, namely the Genoans.

Anti-government web sites are springing up, the latest Harry Potter book is a bestseller, teenagers across the country are celebrating the defeat of a national curfew bill, and surveillance cameras are banned. Crime is totally unknown. New Genoa's national animal is the Greyhound, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Allied Credit.
