History

Nikornia, classified by the United nations as a "Left-Leaning College State", was known as Zenowania prior to a violent revolution in mid 2003. Since then, Nikornia has been characterized by a staunch liberal bent, excellent education and healthcare, and primarily libertarian policies. However, in the area of business the government waxes tyranical. In fact, private enterprise was declared illegal by the parliament in a near unanimous vote. Since then it has gone on to legalize all recreational drugs, public nudity, consensual canabalism, and almost every other possible progressive policy.

Leaders

Zenowania was led by Generalissimo El Zeno, but during the Octobrist Revolution in 2003 he was assasinated by the current Prime Minister: "Iron Joe" Kerensky. Kerensky was second in command to the revolutionary leader Nicholai McKornikoff who later died of Tuberculosis. This has prompted many advances in acessability of medicine. Since then, and the subsequent election of the current PM, the conservative party has been routinely defeated in fair and open elections.

Social Issues

Prime Minister Kerensky has stated emphatically that the Parliment, or "Duma", will strive to meet the rising crime problems, and to that effect he has increased police funding. However, critics have siad that it is too little too late after his government singlehandedly dismantled the military. Granted his typically secular politics, the religious right has also been attacking his legitimacy. The nation is sharply divided and he may not win the next election.

International Issues

Nikornia is a typically liberal state surrounded by both similar states and nonsimilar nations. The downside to this is that as they all share a certain degree of culture, and granted the nationalistic slant of the regional government, Nikornia may sucede in the near future to retain its distance from imperialist thought.
