The Bureaucratic States of Oglethorpia is a peaceful nation located within The Plain Flat Plains.

History

Politics

The Bureaucratic States of Oglethorpia has the standard executive, legislative and judicial branches as in many modern nation states. However, their exact operations are quite different in Oglethorpia.

Executive

The Incumbency office of the executive branch is made up of a President, Prime Minister, Premier, Chief Administrator, Governor General and Chancellor. Currently, these positions are held by Roald Regeln, Toby Snare, Michael Gorbopot, Billiam Brown, Day Gravis and Jurgen Thomas. The President, Prime Minister and Premier act as a collective presidency for the nation, while the Chief Administrator, Governor General and Chancellor play a similar role presiding over the bureaus of the executive branch, roughly equating to the Incumbency's cabinet (see bureaus). The circle formed by the Chief Administrator, Governor General and Chancellor also act as a "vice collective presidency," filling in the collective presidency when necessitated.

Due to the time and effort necessitated to elect the Incumbency, the term limits for anyone Incumbency have been set at 20 years; thus, when Oglethorpians talk about a new Incumbency they look at the first 500 days of the office. Executive decrees and declarations of war are first voted upon within the office; having survived the first stage, these measures are then voted on by Parliament. In each case, a 2/3 majority is necessary before the decision is enacted.

While it seems as if the office of the Incumbency has grown bloated, it has proven successful in fairly representing the Bureaucratic States's various parties in the executive as sucessfully as the legislative.

Bureaus

The heads of Oglethorpia's three primary bureaus form the basis of the Incumbency's "cabinet;" in actuality, a post held by three people with slightly less stature than those in the incumbency. These bureaus serve as administrative divisions to their various areas of influence; legislation and decrees on the local level are made by the federal government, however. Heading up each bureau is the Bureau Chief; in times of emergency, this role is usually superceded by the Incumbency. The bureaus are;

  • State Bureau
    • The State Bureau handles matters within the borders of the nation. Primarily, the bureau concerns itself with the transportation affairs of the Bureaucratic States, law enforcement, and most local government affairs. There is a grey area with the Foreign Relations Bureau over border administration.
  • Foreign Relations Bureau
    • The Foreign Relations Bureau is most well known for handling diplomacy and other international affairs, especially with a greater degree of freedom than the State Bureau. Years ago, the Foreign Relations Bureau's administrative powers stretched to the military, before it became so large it eventually necessitated a new bureau.
  • Defense Bureau
    • The Defense Bureau handles military mobilization during peacetime, research and development of new weapons and other related military matters. During wartime the Incumbency takes on the role of Collective Commander in Chief of the armed forces.

Legislative

The Oglethorpian Parliament is comprised of 900 seats, with the ability to leverage power equal to that of the Incumbency. Parliament secured its power in the Oglethorpian Parliament Conflict with President Charles Jarvis. Even with the amount of seats in Parliament available, the Liberal Party, Conservative Party and Other Party have very rarely been able to secure a majority vote. Only on four occassions has it happened, and with terms of 4 years (one-fifth that of the presidency) the power wielded was short lived.

While the Incumbency is dependent upon Parliament's consent in wielding its executive power, so too is Parliament; bills and protocols originiating in Parliament are subject to a 2/3 veto vote among the Incumbency office.

Judicial

The judicial branch of the Oglethorpian government defines the power of both the executive and legislative in matters of dispute. This branch of government saw major expansion after the clash between the executive and Parliament in the Oglethorpian Parliamentary Conflict. Since then, the judicial has done little to change the existing checks and balances within government. It is the Lower Courts that see the most action; as such, Upper and Middle Court appointments are seldom paid attention.

Levels of government

Oglethorpia is notable for the omnipotent nature of the federal government. State-operations within the Bureaucratic States stem from the government's State Bureau, with approximate areas of influence but no actual system of administrative divisions in place. These are usually in the form of Subcommittees; in hierarchical form, the Incumbency is responsible for the bureau's decisions whom are responsible for the decisions of their many subcommittees.

Foreign relations

The Bureaucratic States maintain friendly relations with Faxilvania, The Etherlands, Isitreal and Kingsford. Policy is not so friendly towards Stanigramistan in the south, but the two countries remain on speaking terms.

Oglethorpia resides north of the Stanigramistan, shares a border with Swedeway to the north, and borders with Kingsford and Faxilvania in the east. It has coasts on both the Tar Pin Sea and the Brine Sea; to the north and south respectively.

Cities

Megalopolis City, the capital is located in the northwestern corner of the nation. Steerford, Oglethorpia's second largest city, is near the western border next to Stanigramistan. Polyesterhampton, Oglethorpia's primary port, is located on a large flat island offshore in the southwestern corner of the country.

Economy

Pursuing an economic policy favorable to its own corporations, Oglethorpia has been able to foster and maintain a formidible trade surplus of over 100 billion Parcels. The fluctuation of the unemployment rate has been stabilized by the government's adjustment of bureaucratic measures, forcing corporations to hire on workers when the unemployment pool grows too large.

The policy has yet to yield a forced layoff, but some economists predict that will soon change. Recently, the government has made these adjustments designed to control the pool of prospective workers much more gradual to prevent the need to employ the agenda in reverse.

Transportation

Oglethorpia has three primary means of transportation. They are;

  • Airway (air)
  • Maglev (rail)
  • Highexpressturnpikeway (road)

With the centrilization of the population into three distinct metropolitan areas, large international airports have sprung up providing passenger and cargo service to both near and far destinations. Nearby nations such as Faxilvania and Kingsford maintain maglev connections to Oglethorpia, which has proven a cheap alternative to air travel in both passenger and cargo transportation.

The Oglethorpian Highexpressturnpikeway connects Steerford to the capital, and from there goes to the border, branching out and ending at the destinations of Bookrest, Faxilvania and Northern City, Kingsford. Lately, the popularity and simplicity of maglev travel has seen a decline in the popularity of the five-lane each way road system.

Polyesterhampton serves as Oglethorpia's only and largest seaport, but is seldom used in comparison with air, rail and road figures individually.

Culture

Military

The Oglethorpian military is split up into three branches. They are;

  • Bureaucratic States Army
  • Bureaucratic States Air Force
  • Bureaucratic States Navy

These positions have taken on a defensive role within Oglethorpia, and it is often joked that a post within the Oglethorpian military is one of the safest jobs within the nation.
