Government

The government of the Tribal Protectorate of Patrynia is a (mostly) benevolent autocracy, ruled by the Lord Protector, who makes the rules of the nation and enforces them. This position is earned by right of triumph in combat, an extremely violent and quite meritocratic method of selection. Theoretically, any Patryn of either sex from any clan could become the Lord Protector.

Current Leadership

The current Lord Protector of Patrynia is Daryk of Clan Dragyn. He sets forth the policies of the Protectorate, generally allowing the populace to do what they want with their lives and their finances as long as they fully aknwlege that he is the one in charge. For those who choose not to aknowledge him as the ruler, death is almost always the consequence, often with a bit of rune-torture preceding the act of killing.

The Protectorship is one of only two government positions available. The other is the position of High Magus, lately held by Dugren, who in a striking coincidence happens to be Daryk's son. The High Magus acts as the primary enforcer for the Lord Protector, often doing battle with political opponents in an ancient arena, ostensibly to give them a fair chance at making their views known and possibly overthrowing the current Protector, but more likely meant to be a practical means of eliminating challengers.

Origins

Patrynia was formed when the Sundered Worlds were brought back together by the power of the Wave and the Progenitors working in concert. The oral tradition tells of a Patryna man and woman, Terru and Erat, who created all things by joining the circle in the midst of the Wave, their thoughts coming together as one and the power of the Wave making those thoughts the substance of reality. However, it is rumored that the Archives of the Lord Protector contain a true history of the events (among many other valuable factual historical documents) that is quite different from the oral tradition. It is not known by anyone but the Lord Protector and the High Magus whether these documents are not released because of the dissent and chaos they might cause, or because they are merely fictions.

Culture

Patryns are generally a fiercely independent and strong-willed people endowed with God-like innate magical ability, and as a result tend to be seen as arrogant by others. This is hardly surprising. They are often arrogant, and xenophobic as well, in the sense that they view all other peoples as inherently inferior. When it comes to their views of each other, however, there is considerably more respect and appreciation. Although, this greater degree of respect does not necessarily constitute what many other peoples would consider an appropriate level of respect for member's of one's own people. The denizens of Patrynia tend to be violent and harsh to one another, in some cases casually killing one another over small slights. This trend is more common in urban areas, but does occur in rural locales on occasion as well.

Clothing tends to be thick and practical, covering the wearer quite well, in the interests of not allowing others to see the runes tattooed upon their bodies, not out of a sense of modesty or shame, or even for protection from the elements. Being a very practical people, most choose to complement their clothing with an assortment of useful pouches and weapons. Children are educated in the use of these weapons from a very young age, as well as in the rune-based language and its powerful magic, tactics, and unarmed combat.
