Paulus Jaarinen was President of Nimzonia from January 19, 1976 to October 23, 2004.

Early life and Career

Paulus Jaarinen was born in the maritime city of Port Odea in south-western Nimzonia on June 12, 1939. His father was killed during the German occupation of Nimzonia, and this spurred the young Paulus to join the army in 1957. He was commissioned as a lieutenant, and joined the Anchor Pary in 1961. After leaving the army in 1971 with the rank of Major, he dedicated himself to a political career and became a trusted advisor of General Hjaargdals, then president of Nimzonia. By Hjaargdals' patronage, Jaarinen rose to the rank of General and was named heir to the presidency, which he attained when Hjaargdals died of a stroke in 1976. Jaarinen took steps to modernise Nimzonia's economy, and improve diplomatic relations. He negotiated a treaty with Indian Casino Operator to protect their mutual interests in the arctic, and his presidency saw the signing of the infamous Missing Zeroes Treaty with MadderMike, resulting in the latter virtually ceding a portion of territory in the former Western Manarth for a lease of 99 years.

Family

Jaarinen's first marriage was to Eliza Haakmann in 1964. They had two daughters. Eliza died in a shipreck in 1969.

In 1977 he married Maria Borgesdottir, and they had four daughters and one son, Ottokar Jaarinen (b. 1986) who would become his hier.

Death and Legacy

On October 23, 2004 Paulus Jaarinen was assassinated by E-C-N Corporation mercenaries working for Emmanuel Helstag, while attending the Arctic Carnival in Koenberg, leading to the Nimzonian Civil War. Although his detractors accused him of maintaining a personality cult, he remains Nimzonia's most popular head of state, and can be cited as a prime example of a benevolent dictator.
