Sapphire Coast

The Democratic Republic of Sapphire Coast is a very large, socially progressive nation, renowned for its strong anti-business politics. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 100 million are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and the Environment. The average income tax rate is 68%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

A well-funded social safety net protects the unfortunate, it is illegal for police officers to carry out searches due to strict privacy laws, convicted murderers are free to walk the streets provided they attend rehabilitation classes, and abortions are routinely performed in Sapphire Coast's hospitals. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Sapphire Coast's national animal is the black-footed cat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the noble.

Government

The centre of Sapphire Coast's government is located in Emileah, the capital city. Throughout history, the country's presidents have prided themselves on working closely with Sapphire Coast's citizens. For the most part, they put the people's agenda before their own, in the spirit of a true democracy.

Languages

Sapphire Coast has three official languages: Sahrilein, English, and French. Sahrileihn is the country's native language, though the majority of Sapphire Coast's citizens speak English and French. For the past five hundred years, Sahrilein seemed to be dying out, but during the past half-century, its popularity has rapidly grown.
