Overview

The Royal Federation of the Genoshan Isles (Latin: Conventus Regalis Genoshus) is a island nation located in the region of Conservative Paradise, comprised of 300 islands and 2000 atolls. Most of the population is located on the capital island, Corinth, and 120 surrounding islands. Situated in the Genoshan Sea, the Genoshan Isles is a constitutional monarchy, with representation in the NationStates United Nations.

Political System

The Genoshan Isles is a Constitutional Monarchy. This system is unique in its region, and the first to operate in such a way that the Sovereign is a functioning Head of State, instead of figurative. The Constitution of the Royal Federation of the Genoshan Isles is the supreme law of the land. Under the law, by the law, and for the law, the Sovereign reigns. The government is led by a Prime Minister, acting on behalf of the Sovereign, with a bicameral legislature, the Genoshan Parliament. At the head of Parliament, sits the Sovereign. The upper house, the House of Lords, contains men and women of noble rank and peerage, not including members of the immediate Royal Family and Next of Kin. They hold seats for life, unless revoked by the Sovereign, on the advice of the Prime Minister and House of Lords. The Lords represent individual islands in the Federation. While they are not elected, they do have a constituency that they properly represent. The lower house, the General Assembly, is elected through parties, and members of each island from each party are represented in the Assembly. Most legislative power is vested in the Assembly, but it cannot act unilaterally; it needs the approval of the House of Lords and the Sovereign.

The Sovereign

The House of Lancaster is the second royal house to rule the Genoshan Isles. The current Sovereign is Michael Aurelius. He is styled, His Serene Majesty, Michael Aurelius I, by the Grace of God, 15th King and Lord Protector of the Genoshans, Steward of the House of Genosha, Duke of Anvard, Master of all Islands Submerged and Outlying Territories thereof, etc. All titles are symbolic:
His Serene Majesty
A seafaring people, the Genoshans understand the confusion that can ensue from a panicky captain of ship in a storm. The Sovereign, being the "captain of the country", must be calm in all circumstances.
By the Grace of God
Being a devout nation, the Genoshans believe there is a time and purpose for everything, and their Sovereign only rules because God put him there.
15th King and Lord Protector of the Genoshans
The king is the symbol of all Genoshans. As head of state, the king is the Lord Protector (or chief guardian) of all Genoshans.
Steward of the House of Genosha
After the House of Genosha was absorbed into the House of Lancaster, it was decided through Parliament that the establishing house of the country should be preserved in the embodiment of the Crown.
Duke of Anvard
The first ruler of the Federation, HSM King Corinth, began as the chief of Anvard, the capital village of the island of Anvard. All subsequent rulers have held their capital in Anvard, following in the tradition of Corinth.
Master of all Islands Submerged and Outlying Territories thereof
The land belongs to the Crown. It is the Sovereign's duty to take care of all land under his/her dominion, whether it has broken the surface of the water or not.
Etc
As the Genoshan Isles are a federation of islands, the Sovereign is, by law and convention, the king of each island and atoll. As there are numerous islands, it is better to add "etc" to the end, rather than list all titles.

The Prime Minister

With the election of Parliament, a Prime Minister is selected from either house. The Prime Minister must then create a government of ministers from the Parliament, most of which must come from the lower house. The Prime Minister's primary concern is the establishment of domestic policy, and serves as the Sovereign's voice in the Parliament. The incumbent Prime Minister is the Right Honorable Frances Meridian, 2nd Baroness Meridian, from Conrissa. Lady Frances was voted in, after PM Welles tendered his resignation. She is also a member of the House of Lords, from an aristocratic family that governed the island of Conrissa before the formation of the federation. At 47, she is the second-youngest PM and the second female to hold that position. She takes a more moderate stance than her predecessor, but she still classifies herself as a conservative. Her term in office will begin at the start of the new Parliamentary session, on 30 October.
