History
The Beginning
In the beginning The Great Commonwealth was not called The Great Commonwealth nor did any form of it exist. It was made up of lords. These lords controlled their own land, made their own laws and controlled the people they ruled over. All the Lords were dictactors and ruled their people with an iron fist. There were many revolutions against the Lords. Most were stampted out with force but one was sucessful. This revolution has come to be known as the "Great Revolution" The revolution started in 654AD when George White, a Peasant, was attacked by guards for not paying the unfair taxes imposed by the Lord, Lord Richmond. Other peseants joined in the fight and killed the two guards. As word of this act spread pockets of resistance opened up all over the province of Richmond. Eventually these pockets came together, with George White as their leader. They knew that they would never be truly free untill the Lord was dead and his seat of power, Fort Robinbreast, was captured. The resistance made swords and shields, they trained day and night. When they were ready they attacked. On May 2nd 665 the attack came. Just before the battle a messenger was sent with a note. This is what we now think it contained:
"Before you is the army of those you have suppressed, we are the army of liberty and justice. Allow all men to live without your influence and no more blood need be spilt. Justice will prevail"
The messenger was killed. At the break of day the Resistance stormed the castle and after a long and bloody battle they took the keep. By the end the Lord lay at George White's feet, dead. Now the region must be rebuilt.
The Rebuilding
George White renamed the region Valde. He imposed fair taxes and intorduced a very basic legal system where crimes would be brought before those he deemed sensible and intelligent enough to judge. There was some talk about what to do with the fort, it would be a useful center of power but it had grown to be a symbol of everything that the people hated. Because of this it was ordered that it should be destroyed. On its ruins was built a simple thatch hut. This was to be the seat of power of George White. It embodied everything that George White was about, humility, justice, equality. It is these values that would lead Valde through the next 500 years to become the center of The Great Commonwealth.
