Geography

Tubbut is a huge city on the Deddick River in the north of Errinundera. Like other cities in the Deddick region its wealth is based upon the extensive agricultural production along the river valley.

Marstuna and 1889-1892 Civil War

The city is most famous, however, for Marstuna, the outlaw base of the princess siaros, who, from 1889 to 1892, led the resistance to the rule of her older sister, athpelyn, and her foreign husband, curtu, known as the usurper. The ruin of the base, once a few kilometres upstream of the city but since swallowed up by its suburbs, is now a national monument. Tubbut has adopted the flag of siaros who chose it to contrast with the green and gold sun flag of the royal family (see McKillops Bridge - Milosis flag).

In 1892 the charismatic and popular siaros led her numerically superior but inexperienced army against the highly trained Royal Army of athpelyn and curtu. The Battle of the Pass, fought in a ravine near Deddick, ended with the defeat of the rebels and the death of siaros.

In reprisal athpelyn razed Marstuna and massacred whatever surviving inhabitants could be found.

Sacred Tree

In 1967, to mark the 75th anniversary of the battle and the subsequent repression, the National Parliament in First Creek Falls presented Tubbut with a Shining Gum seedling to be planted at Marstuna. The Registry in Goongerah accredited MARSTUNA as a Sacred Tree. Tubbut is one of only a small number of locations in the two populous regions of Deddick and Upper Snowy to have a such a tree. Although the climate is not ideally suited to the species it has been tended with great care and is now a vigorously healthy specimen.
