Background

The Woodstock Pact, a 21-member alliance devoted to the protection of human rights, was founded by Senior Vice President for External Affairs Mark Lorber at the behest of President Mike Sarzo with the intention of drawing Sarzonia's closest allies into a single alliance that would bind all of them together. As the alliance began to find its legs, other countries with similar midsets also expressed their interest in joining.

While the Pact was founded and is operated by Sarzonia, the Pact is a democratic one. Decisions are discussed, debated, and voted upon, and the majority decision governs the Pact. As of yet, Sarzonia has not exercised its prerogative as the founding nation to announce any unilateral decisions.* Such action is reserved only for genuinely grave emergencies, such as declarations of war against the Pact and grievous violations of Pact laws and codes of conduct.

The Pact's headquarters are located in Woodstock, the Sarzonian capital, at the corner of Praeton and Isselmere.

Primary Mission / Economic Support

The Pact's primary mission is the protection of human rights in member nations and the defence of human rights in non-member nations throughout the world. Other central goals for the alliance include providing economic support for fellow members. In the event of financial difficulties, members are expected to help one another. In addition, some countries in the Pact offer discounts for member nations in their dominant industries. Most, if not all, of the Woodstock Pact nations contribute annually to the treasury.

Diplomatic Support

Another central theme of the Pact is provision of diplomatic support. In the event a member nation faces international pressure from other countries, Pact countries express their diplomatic support of their fellow members, occasionally preventing the escalation of diplomatic tensions into overt or covert armed conflict.

Mutual Defence

Finally, the Pact includes a strong element of mutual defence. In the event a member nation faces a military threat, Pact countries are expected to provide military, logistical, economic, or diplomatic support as their economic, diplomatic, or military means permit them to do. In the event of a civil war or other insurrection, Pact nations hold a referendum to determine the Pact's best course of action. Once the referendum is decided upon, the Alliance acts as one.

Membership in the Woodstock Pact

Membership in the Pact is highly selective and depends on a variety of factors: Respect for human rights; existence of a democratic system of government; strong reputation throughout the international community as demonstrated by a background check into the applying nation.** Background checks are performed by the founder and consist of reading through prior RP posts to determine RP style and compatibility of government policies to Woodstock Pact ideals. A democratic system of government is defined as a government which is based on a representative system of government, requiring an election of a Legislature with significant authority. Failing that, extensive political rights (ie, voting in local elections or regular referenda) must be existent for a country to be considered for the alliance.

New Additions

Although the Pact received no new members in the Pact after the original thirteen, interest from countries in joining the Woodstock Pact has continued to experience revitalisation. Recently, the Pact added its fourteenth member, The Moepoeian Republic, which was, before joining, already a trusted ally of Pacitalia and now, of the other thirteen members of the Pact. Sarzonia officially notified Ollieland of its acceptance into the Pact, making it the fifteenth member. There are a few more expected additions as more applications begin to surface.
