Capital

Port Hayes, named after the discover of the islands the British explorer John Hayes. Population 200 million.

Major Cities

Fort Harvey, named for the fist governor. Population 250 million. Orton, named for its high quality Iron Ore, now home to a massive Royal Armament Corporation mine and steelworks. Popualtion 120 milllion.

Language

Mainly English which is the official language, though various immigrants have brought their own languages with them.

Geography

Lesser Ribena is a group of three islands in rough East to West alignment, the Westernmost island is known as West Island, with Mid Island and East Island following in obvious order. The inner geography of each island is mountainous with a large grassy plain extending to the coast. This plain is dotted with various forests, rivers and nature reserves. The majority of the popualtion live on the grassy plain where the land is fertile and farming, though a declining trade and highly mechanised, is extremely easy - the soils constituting various alluvial deposits and a mix of organic matter from the decidious forests. The city of Orton is am exceptin to the general trend of large coastal cities, it's 150 million people live and work on a large plateau in the cnetral mountain range. The population largely being employees of the Royal Armament Corporation. The Ribenan Heritage Association has a policy of offering generous government funded subsidies to those who contribute to improving the environment of Ribena, particularly those farmers who use traditional hedge borders for their field which encourages much wildlife. The Heritage Association also works diligently to protect various historic sites of the islands, including buildings from the colonial era and several relics from a long dad tribe who were indiginous to the islands. The latter consisting largely of burial mounds and stone circles which have baffled archaeologists as to their construction and use.

History

Lesser Ribena was discovered in 1793 by John Hayes who was trying to get to Van Diemen's Land, he claimed it for the crown and soon a hardy band of settlers had founded the Lesser Ribena colony. A larger landmass to the South West was known as Greater Ribena, this was not colonised due to rumours amingst a small native population of large and fiercesome creatures that dwelt there. This area is now formally known as The Colony of Ollieland. The colony of Lesser Ribena grew quickly and is home to many international corporations and over 3.1 billion people, both native Ribenans and immigrants who have taken advatage of the nation's open doors immigration policy.

Taxes are noted as being very high with a maximum 99.5% tax on individual earnings above 500,000 groats (roughly $850,0000) to encourage limited social equality.

Major Corporations

Although many multi-national corporations were begun and have offices in Lesser Ribena one of the most renowned and well known (at least locally) is the Royal Armamnets Corporation. This corporation supplies the Lesser Ribenan military with all it's ground support needs as well as exporting to many other countries. The corporation is a major employer accounting for around 4% of all jobs in the country and supplying 8% of the GDP. There are two major facilities: a main plant on Mid Island and an iron ore mine and a steel works on West Island.

Political System

Constitutional Monarchy. The monarch retains power of the country though a parliament of elected representatives who keep the day to day running of the country in hand.

Military

The current military employs just 0.25% of the country's popualtion. Resulting in the following structure:

Royal Army - 4 million, of which 1.5 million are frontline soldiers Royal Air Force - 1 million of which 120,000 are pilots Royal Navy - 3 million of which 2 million serve onboard ships Total: 8 million including logistics staff

There is also a Territorial Army of volunteers who train for 28 days a year on regular army pay and are available for call up in times of need by an act of parliament. Their current strength is around 1.2 million men, of which 1 million are frontline ground forces, the remainder being logistics. The military is one of the highest paying sectors of industry, with an average wage of G26,000 ($40,000) ranging from G15,000 ($27,000) for a recruit in training, increasing to G20,500 ($35,000) for a trained private. The wages re ina dition to free food and accomodation being provided for all those who serve. A large pension program looks after the retired/wounded/killed serviceman/woman and their families. Both men and women serve in all arms with approximately 15% of the armed forces being women.
