Southern Trodenhiem started out as a small fortified town, however they flourished off of the trade that poured through the Southern Channels towards Phillbert, and they grew, expanding slowly at first occupying ungoverned lands, until they controlled the passage of trade into Phillbert through the Straits of Raluhaar and the Southern Channels, meaning effectively that all trade through the south of Technopolis went through Southern Trodonian waters and ports. Southern Trodenhiem has had a long standing friendship with the nation of Nuevo Marseille and as such NM Merchants and Traders only pay subsidised tax (which is far less than the tax of other merchants) of 0.1%, while other traders pay up to 2%, sometimes even 5% depending on the goods in question. This healthy level of tax allows Southern Trodenhiem to control the price and rate of inflation of many commodities in Technopolis, and the clever system of taxation means that economies of all the nations that rely on trade through the Straits of Raluhaar and the Southern Channels boom as their goods gain high value and sell for far more.

Southern Trodenhiem was formally founded over a period of time in 1982 (A.D.) following the end of the Trodonian Civil war. It was founded by Michael T. van Saar and Peter P. van der Houten, the leaders of the popular faction among the common people of the southern areas of [[Trodenhiem]], called the Messopotamian Monks.
 +

 +
The Messopotamian Monks were originally a deeply religious faction that fought what it called crusades, to protect the people of the Southern Areas of Trodenhiem from the ravagings of the corrupt and ruthless Thunderhawk and Black Corps. factions, however it soon became more a community organisation, defending the people rather than (like the other factions) attempting to sieze power. In this they were very successful and built a small safe zone within the lands of Trodenhiem, that they called the Southern Trodonian Green Zone.
 +

 +
As the war progressed the Green Zone became larger and larger and the Messopotamian Monks formed a proper democratic government to rule over it and the faction. This enabled them to form foreign relations with nations such as [[North Cadia]] and [[Promethius Prime]], and thus they gained international recognition as an independant state, recieving aid and arms as well as soldiers to defend their territories.

With the re-appearance of the Emperor, the land holdings of the Messopotamian Monks became significantly decreased as they ceded it back to the Empire. However the Emperor's refusal outright to form a constitutional monarchy lead to their formal declaration of independance of their only remaining territory, the city of Jharhara. This did not go down too well with the Emperor, who, going against the requests of both [[North Cadia]] and [[Promethius Prime]] invaded and captured the city, after which he exiled its inhabitants and all that refused his rule.

Police are not just law enforcers, but friendly community members who help run and participate in the running of local communities. They help families in financial trouble or the like and often dispense community service orders instead of fines or prison sentances for minor offences on families in a tight spot. Community spirit is very important to the society of Southern Trodenhiem and most people know their neighbours well and they all help each other out, as such crime is very low.

History

Historic Overview

Southern Trodenhiem was once a part of The Empire of Trodenhiem, Southern Trodenhiem left the Empire after the Trodonian Civil War, a bloody and futile struggle following the dissappearance of the Trodonian Emperor.

The civil war ended upon the return of the Emperor, who rebuilt the nation. However there were still factions that remained seperatist, and though the civil war was over, they openly opposed the government. The two main factions were The Cassiun Free State, who founded the splinter state of Northern Trodenhiem (now a part of Federal Trodenhiem) and the Messopotamian Monks, who found Southern Trodenhiem, which we now know.

Originally Southern Trodenhiem was a small city state based in the city of Jharhara, however following invasion by the Emperor's soldiers, the monks were forced to flee and found Southern Trodenhiem on the Island of Lharse, which is now the capital of the nation we know today.

Tax and rich trade resources from the mediterranean climate of Southern Trodenhiem, made the government and the people very rich, and most of the nation's services are privately owned, which is why the government budget for many things is so low.

Relations with Nuevo Marseille

Nuevo Marseille has been a long standing trade partner and ally of Southern Trodenhiem, indeed it was Nuevo Marseille that for a long time provided Southern Trodenhiem with soldiers in order to defend itself, and arrangement that now is limitted only to a unit of 200 elite soldiers, and is more a ceremonial and traditional role than anything.

Southern Trodenhiem sells wines, silks and precious stones and metals to Nuevo Marseille in exchange for goods such as leather, whisky, alcoholic beverages among other things and as a result the two nation's economies have benefitted.

Founding

Southern Trodenhiem was formally founded over a period of time in 1982 (A.D.) following the end of the Trodonian Civil war. It was founded by Michael T. van Saar and Peter P. van der Houten, the leaders of the popular faction among the common people of the southern areas of Trodenhiem, called the Messopotamian Monks.

As the war progressed the Green Zone became larger and larger and the Messopotamian Monks formed a proper democratic government to rule over it and the faction. This enabled them to form foreign relations with nations such as North Cadia and Promethius Prime, and thus they gained international recognition as an independant state, recieving aid and arms as well as soldiers to defend their territories.

With the re-appearance of the Emperor, the land holdings of the Messopotamian Monks became significantly decreased as they ceded it back to the Empire.
