Banco Nazionale di Pacitalia e Pacitalianista Rispunsanta Bassoniva, or BNP Paribas (PAX800: BNP) -- English: National Bank of Pacitalia and Pacitalian Retail Savings Union Conglomerate -- is Pacitalia's second-largest chartered corporate bank by assets and value. It has 15,877 branches in Pacitalia, as well as a further 10,221 outside the country. Through its marketed name, BNP Paribas, it operates personal/retail, commercial and automated banking and financial services for 3,106,387,915 individual accounts in Pacitalia and 51 foreign countries (BNP corporate estimates, Sept/05).

History

As the long-form name of the company suggests, BNP Paribas was created by the merger of Banco Nazionale di Pacitalia CCAm (BNP) and Pacitalianista Rispunsanta Bassoniva (Paribasso). The merger occurred in 1929. The original name of the company was BNP-Paribasso CCAm, but it was shortened in 1998 when the new and current slogan, "the power of green", was introduced. Since 1929, BNP Paribas has been a major player in the Pacitalian market, with more and more focus shifting towards international banking and commerce operations, particularly retail-personal banking in other economic powerhouses.

In August 2003, BNP Paribas was surpassed by Banco di Mandragora for the title of largest bank in Pacitalia. BNP Paribas is currently investigating opportunities both abroad and at home to increase its market share and thusly regain the lead position, but a large acquisition would be needed, since BM's assets are nearly twenty trillion douros higher as of October 2005. Rumours about a possible merger between BNP Paribas and the fifth-largest bank in Pacitalia, Elementa (Investimenti Conpopolare d'Elementa), have not been commented on by either bank.

Activity

Market capitalisation and asset holdings: BNP Paribas has, since its inception, been one of the top three Pacitalian banks in terms of market capitalisation. The totals currently stand at about Đ67.26tn (real). With 3.1 billion individual accounts, that gives an average of Đ21,654.25 per account. The value of the company itself stands at about Đ372.1 billion.

Employment: BNP Paribas has the most employees of any bank in Pacitalia, with almost 200,000. That's twice as high as number-one bank BM, and 85,000 more than fourth-largest bank ABN Amro.
