Summary

Adam Island is a large, advanced nation in the International Democratic Republic. Led by elected officials in a parliamentary system, they still retain the old regal titles that were used in the Republic for centuries. Despite a long history of bloody warfare, Adam Island is relatively peaceful now, and an example on human rights for the rest of the world.

Adam Island (AIS) formerly served as a delegate to the International Democratic Union and remains an active player in world politics. AIS is also the physical home of the online news aggregate, NationStates Newswire.

Religion

Adam Islanders follow various forms of Buddhism, and there are 11 'holy cities' scattered across the main island. They are independently goverened by local authorities. The symbol of the inverted pyramid on the flag is a traditional religious symbol.

Sports

There are many Adam Islandic sports clubs and associations. It is often joked that Adam Islanders laid down their weapons of war only to fight on the baseball field or soccer pitch. If Adam Island can be said to have a 'national sport' then it is most likely baseball, governed by the Adam Island Baseball League.

Government

Adam Island was once a monarchy, but the forward-thinking rulers made plans to transfer over to Democratic rule. Currently the Libertarian Party holds a slim plurality in the Adamstag.

Organization

The Republic of Adam Island has no states or provinces, but each city has its own local government with considerable autonomy.

The King/Queen of Adam Island is elected every three years, by a simply pluralty popular vote. The King/Queen has the power to approve or veto legislation that comes from the parliament, known as the Adamstag and the power to appoint ambassadors, diplomats and delegates to international governments.

Parliament is elected simply as well. It is a unicameral body, with 100 members. Seats are awarded proportionally based on party vote. Only legislation that they approve can be signed by the President. They have no power of veto override or impeachment.

Parties

Libertarian Party

The Libertarian Party of Adam Island is the ruling party in the Republic. They control the throne, and have the most seats in the Parliament.

They support all civil liberties as well as economic liberties. They are militarily non-interventionist, and very pro-democracy. They also try and work with world governments and alliances.

Neo-Royalist Party

The Neo-Royalists are citizens who desire a return to the monarcy. They feel it was a mistake to move towards Democracy, as it will destabilize the country and allow unqualified leaders. Many of them are those who feel that the regime that handed over power to the people stole the throne in the first place.

They are moderate on economic and civil freedoms.

Mercantilist

The Mercantilist Party is also very pro-democracy and pro-civil liberties. It is the second largest party in the Republic. However, they support a large welfare state and high taxes. They recieve a lot of support from the large corporations throughout the country, due to their promises of subsidies and tarriffs.

Values

The values leader is Dhammadharo, a Fundamentalist Island Buddhist. Fundamentalist Island Buddhism has a violent apocalyptic undertone to many of the teachings.

The Values Party is for the government enforcement of religious values and seeks to stomp out secularism.

Corporations

Adam Island's laissez-faire business policies have attracted numerous corporations, with few able to build up a semi-consistant monopoly. Labor unions are strong and yield great influence. Adam Islanders express rabid brand loyalty. Adam-Cola once ran an ad featuring a man wandering in the desert, dying of thirst. He came across another traveler, who offered him a drink from one of Adam-Cola's rivals, Dr. Adam. The man refused because he would never drink a beverage like that. The ad was pulled after several stories came up of this actually happening to Adam Islanders.

Calendar

The Adam Island calendar year began in 2001, the year the monarchs officially handed power over to the democratic government. It runs on the standard Julian calendar adopted by most NationStates. There is, however, no exact speed at which it runs at compared to the 'real-life' calendar.
