Becquerelia is a small, predominatly Christian nation based in the northern Levant.

History

The Beginning of Becquerelia

Becquerelia was founded as a result of the First Crusade. St. Henri "The Radiant" was the son of a fairly insignificant French noble when he chose to follow Pope Urban II's call to help the Byzantine Empire and to free Jerusalem. He left in 1096 with a fairly sizable army of knights and peasants. He fought bravely at Nicaea, Dorylaeum and Antioch, and was involved in the seige of Jerusalem. After victory in Jerusalem, he led his contingent of troops north along the Mediterranean and sacked a small port city, and declared it the capital of a new kingdom, Becquerelia. This new country was named after the region from which Saint Henri was from. Henri assumed the title as King of Becquerelia.

Becquerelia, from the day of it's formation, was involved in a string of battles with neighboring territories. King Henri was martyred in battle two years after the country was founded. Without any heirs, Henri was followed as King by Hugh of Plancy, at the time a noble in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. King Hugh proved to be a capable leader, and successfully defended Becquerelia in many attacks.

After the collapse of Jerusalem

When the Kingdom of Jerusalem collapsed in 1291, Becquerelia was suddenly surrounded by hostile Muslim forces with no allied Christian nations. Almost immediatly, the focus of Becquerelia went from forcibly repelling attacks, but trying to coexist with the other countries in the area. One way Becquerelia attempted to do this was by allowing Muslims to practice their religion withing the country, and introducing some citizenship rights for Muslims in Becquerelia. Catholics remained the majority, and still had more rights in the country than any other group.

As the Ottoman Empire rose to prominance in the Middle East and completly surrounded Becquerelia, they had a uneasy relationship for the the next several centuries. When all was said and done, Becquerelia and the Ottoman Empire would fight 7 wars and in numerous other skirmishes until the Ottoman Empire dissolved in 1921.

The Creation of Modern Becquerelia

During World War I, Becquerelia joined the war on the side of the allies, hoping to strike a blow against it's rival the Ottoman Empire. Following the allies victory, Becquerelia attempted to gain major concessions from their defeated foes.

The idealistic (and childless) King Philip V struck a deal in which the country would go from being a monarchy to a democracy, and would officially have Becquerelia's over-ambitious border claims settled in their favor by international agreement. However, Turkey's initial distaste for the original treaty (with disagreements on the border with Turkey, and territorial claims of Becquerelia in neighboring lands that Turkey disagreed with) would lead to the negotiations being scrapped for several years. Finally, the Treaty of Lausanne, signed on July 24, 1923, fixed all Turkish-Becquerelian disagreements and was agreed on by all parties involved.

Under the terms of the Treaty of Lausanne, the monarchy and all existant government structures were to be abolished after 825 years of rule, and was to be replaced with a President, a National Assembly, and a High Court on Inaguration Day October 29, 1923 (the last monday of October). Elections were to be held on August 6, 1923 (the first monday of August).

King Philip V was elected President as Philip Rougeot without any significant opposition. Domenic Bennen, a longtime pro-democracy writer and lecturer was elected on the same ticket as Vice-President.

Society of the Orange Banner

The Society of the Orange Banner was founded around 1150 as the Knights of St. Henri to serve pilgrims and crusaders coming to the Holy Land. During battles, Society members would ride on white horses carrying orange flags so that they would be seen by all, and would attempt to help those injured in the fighting. They became renowned for assisting not only Christians, but Muslims and others injured in the fighting.

During the next several centuries, the Society expanded it's responsibilites, from caring for the wounded of battle, to caring for the sick, to assisting the poor, and providing for the weakest in society. In the past couple centuries, the Catholic aspect of the Society has diminished, and it has become a more

One reason for Becquerelia's abscense of social welfare is that the Society of the Orange Banner takes care of many social welfare programs within the country. The Society provides homeless shelters, food banks, blood banks. hospitals, welfare, education assistance, disaster relief, and other socially conscious programs. Because of the large role the Society provides in Becquerelian life, in the Rubric of Rights And Freedoms they were guaranteed seats in the Assembly (2 Senators and 2 Delegates, still less than the 5 total guaranteed to states and cities).

With the creation of the International Red Cross in the early 20th century, and it's introduction worldwide, there was some queston about what roles the Red Cross and Orange Banner would serve in Becquerelia. Eventually it was settled that the Red Cross would serve a much more limited role than the Society, and would assisst Orange Banner as much as it could.

Becquerelia's National Assembaly is made up of two houses: the Assembly of Senators (the Upper House), and the Assembly of Delegates (the Lower House). One unique aspect of Becquerelia's Legislature is that it gives representation to it's military as a whole and to the Soicety of the Orange Banner. Members of the Assembly representing the military and the Order are officially non-partisan, cannot serve any leadership role within the assembly, and are given a state representation of either Military or Orange Banner.
