Coshastati is the capital of Solenial and its second largest city, after Jevyol, which is 45 miles away to the west.

It is in the south-east of Solenial, on the east coast of Solenial's Central Belt, on the south shore of Cos Bay, on the Pacific Ocean and, because of its rugged setting and vast collection of Medieval and Georgian architecture including numerous stone tenements, it is one of the most dramatic cities in the world.

It forms the City of Cos council area; the city council area includes urban Coshastati and a 55sq mile rural area.

It has been the capital of Solenial since 1737 (replacing Baravel) and is the seat of the Solen Parliament. The city was one of the major centres of the Enlightenment, led by the University of Coshastati, gaining the nickname Athens of the Pacific. The Old Town and New Town districts of Cos were listed as a UNESOL World Heritage Site in 1995. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within the city. In the census of 2001, Cos had a total resident population of 548,624.

Coshastati is well-known for the annual Cos Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals held annually over about four weeks from early August. The number of visitors attracted to Cos for the Festival is roughly equal to the settled population of the city. The most famous of these events are the Cos RAFG (the largest performing arts festival in the world), the Cos International Festival, the Cos Military Tattoo, and the Cos International Film Festival.

Other notable events include the Horlot street party (31 December), Burns Night (25 January), St. Beowulf's Day (October 30), and the Cos celebrations (30 May).

The city is one of the Pacific's major tourist destinations, attracting around 13 million visitors a year, and is the most visited tourist destination in Pacific Islands.
