This article deals with Economy as it relates to NationStates. For more general information, see the Wikipedia article on this subject.

Economies on NationStates do not always seem to correspond realistically to real-world economic models. For example, nations that consider themselves communist can very easily maintain strong economies simply by answering the Nationstates issues in a particular way. As such, NationStates economy ratings are not necessarily the best means to determine economic power for roleplaying purposes.

Economy Within NationStates

In the game itself there are 15 economy ratings. They are (in order from best to worst):

  • Frightening
  • All-Consuming
  • Powerhouse
  • Thriving
  • Very Strong
  • Strong
  • Good
  • Fair
  • Reasonable
  • Developing
  • Struggling
  • Weak
  • Fragile
  • Basket Case
  • Imploded

This ranking is determined by a nation's response to issues. Responses that favor business and trade (usually at some expense to labor or the environment) improve the economy while choices that favor labor and the environment hurt the economy. The economy of a nation can also be affected by membership in the UN. Many UN resolutions that have been passed often impede business and economic growth. This leads to many nations possessing UN puppets to protect the economic status of their main nations.

Economy in Roleplay

Since the economy rating on NationStates is very easily manipulated and does not take into account roleplay scenarios enacted on the NationStates forums or regional forums, economy is the GUSTO system. On many region's forums, such as Europe's, whole sections are devolted solely to international business. Nations have roleplayed whole stock exchanges for this economic system, players are able to RP the moving and exchanging of an unimaginable amount of goods and services.
