The Empire of Ermarian is a nation spanning the planet of the same name, which lies within the Alxus System (Alxus III, of a system with only three planets).
Almost entirely covered by oceans, it possesses four known, inhabited continents, named Aizo, Pralgrad, Valorim and Vantanas. The stories of seafaring explorers tell of a legendary fifth continent they dubbed "Doston", which allegedly rose out of the sea during a natural disaster, but no records support this.
The surface of the planet Ermarian is ruled by the Empire of the same name (usually called only "The Empire" by its inhabitants to avoid redundancy). However, it possesses extensive cave systems that are rendered inhabitable largely through magic.
Besides the Empire of Ermarian (explained below), the planet is home to a few other distinct nations, most of which inhabit the cave systems. The largest of these is the Kingdom of Avernum (formerly called Exile), originally a penal colony established by the Empire to get rid of criminals and undesirables.
In the course of events after its establishment in 770 Imperial Era by Emperor Hawthorne II, Avernum developed from a prison for criminals to a dungeon for any kind of dissidents against the sovereignty of the Empire. After most remaining non-humans (Nephilim for the most part) had been exiled as well, it became a dumping ground for the political enemies of anyone with the power to pull the right strings. Eventually, the exiles of Avernum struck back and assassinated the emperor (then Hawthorne III), followed by a long subterranean war between the Empire and Avernum.
Other nations on Ermarian include the Slith Realm of Bahssikava and the nation of the Vahnatai, which both lie below Avernum. Upper Avernum, a small cave system between Avernum proper and the surface, has recently declared sovereignty, as has the continent of Vantanas.
Regional Politics
The Empire of Ermarian is actively involving itself in the feeder politics of The North Pacific, and has for this purpose secured a large plot of neutral land that is barely large enough to hold its capital and embassies, in the region.
Ermarian joined the North Pacific Confederation in March 2005, and briefly played a minor role in the uprising orchestrated by Stars of Sky, temporarily acting as delegate and later as agent in the intelligence department of the region of Stars. It still holds a more or less inactive position as Stars' representative to the Alliance Defense Network, although it might be that Stars has in the meantime appointed a new representative without informing me.
When Moldavi resigned as delegate in TNP, leaving the spot open to the fastest swapper, Ermarian briefly started its own endo campaign (only collecting 90 endorsements that day, due to a general lack of time), but ended up supporting Lungwallabad over Thel DRan. When Stars of Sky gained control of the feeder and engaged in some controversial policies - among them banning the former Directorate from the official talks of government building - Ermarian was markedly critical. Eventually, the nation left NS for a longer time, and when it returned, Tresville had been elected delegate.
Recently, Ermarian has applied to join the diplomatic corps of the North Pacific and become a diplomat. However, it has not yet been assigned as an ambassador to any region or alliance.
